The Kitchener Rangers' first postseason obstacle? Two of the OHL's top scorers

The Kitchener Rangers will enter the 2026 OHL Playoffs in the best position to take home the J. Ross Robertson Cup, but could their party be cut short by a talented-but-low-seeded Saginaw Spirit side?

After being stuck in fourth-place at midseason, the Kitchener Rangers were able to put together a strong second half of the season and end the regular season on top of both the Western Conference and the OHL as a whole. And they did it in style; not only did the Rangers score the third-most goals in the league, but they also had the fourth-best power play. Players like Jack Pridham and Dylan Edwards also made their mark on the OHL's individual leaderboards; Pridham finished the season with 90 points and 46 goals, while Edwards put together his own 40-goal campaign.

But could the Rangers' strong season come to an abrupt halt? Despite entering as the Western Conference's eight-seed and having lost all four regular-season matchups to the Rangers, the Saginaw Spirit don't exactly fit the dictionary's definition of a pushover. It might not exactly show in the standings, but a good handful of the league's top point-scorers do play their hockey for the Spirit. Saginaw also boasts the league's fifth-best power play at 25.7%, which also serves as the second-best road unit with almost 31% efficiency.

Can Saginaw bank on the success of their individual talents to keep pace with Kitchener's superteam?

Unlike a considerable handful of the lower seeds in this postseason, the Spirit will enter the 2025-26 OHL Playoffs with two 90+ point-scorers on their roster.

Nikita Klepov currently leads the OHL in points with 97, a total that includes 37 goals and 60 assists. Klepov's teammate, Egor Barabanov, sits just three places back of him with a total of 91 points (28 goals and 63 assists).

Saginaw also has a third star scorer on their roster: Dimian Zhilkin. Zhilkin's 2025-26 season saw him record 75 points, which included 36 goals and 39 assists; he also led the team in the plus/minus category with a score of +11.

But it's not just the Spirit that has a bevy of top-notch goalscorers. Outside of Pridham and Edwards, who themselves had really strong seasons, Christian Humphreys is going to be a name to watch for the Rangers during these playoffs. Humphreys led the Rangers in assists during the regular season with 58 to his name; at the same time, he recorded the team's fourth-highest goal total at 27.

Other names to watch will include Cameron Reid, who led Kitchener defensemen in points, and Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Sam O'Reilly, who won almost 700 face-offs throughout the regular season.

Final prediction: Rangers in six

The Rangers may be a top seed in the Western Conference by a decent margin, but that doesn't mean they'll advance with relative ease. All Saginaw needs to do to make this a competitive series is win one of the first two games in Kitchener. They have the road power play to do it and they have the point scorers needed to perform on the road.

But does Saginaw have the manpower to contend a full seven-game series with the Rangers? Outside of their top-three scorers, only four players have put up more than 30 points this season; there's also a massive difference in point-scoring between Saginaw's first and second defensive lines. Even then, Saginaw should be more than capable of forcing a third game on home ice while at least making Kitchener complete a round trip to central Michigan and back to end the series.

I would be surprised if Saginaw upsets Kitchener, but my reaction would be constant if the Rangers ended this series in less than six games.
