The New York Rangers recently traded captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks. With that trade came concerns and questions about the next captain of the Rangers, a team that has a list of great captains throughout their long, storied history. One question that remains is will New York name a captain this season or go through that process in the off-season? Here are three logical Rangers who could have the "C" attached to their sweater.
Chris Kreider
Forward Chris Kreider is the one that most think will get the captaincy. In his 13th season with the Rangers, he has led by example and has been there in tough times to guide the team as a veteran voice. Through the years, he has led the team offensively and has taught the younger players how to play the Ranger way. His leadership has gone a long way and so has his play on the ice. A two-time All-Star, he lets his stats do the talking for him. This season, he has 12 goals and one assist for 13 points in 32 games.
Artemi Panarin
Another logical choice for the next captain, Artemi Panarin is the top offensive producer for New York. After coming over as a free agent after two seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Panarin has taken off offensively. The 2015-16 Calder Trophy winner for the league's top rookie has also been an All-Star once in his career (2023). Panarin has been one of the most prolific and consistent scorers in the league since his NHL debut. This season, he has 16 goals and 23 assists for 39 points in 34 games. Along with Kreider, MIka Zibanejad, and Adam Fox, Panarin is an assistant captain who would be a great choice to lead this team. A player who is well respected around the league, he is capable of the pressures of leading a New York-based team.
Ryan Lindgren
Defenseman Ryan LIndgren is a player who has captain qualities. He is vocal, responsible, and puts it all on the ice for the team. He will do anything to help the Rangers win, including blocking shots and getting involved physically. Originally drafted by the Boston Bruins and traded to New York as part of the Rick Nash trade, his play has greatly improved in all three zones. Aside from Fox, it could be argued he is the most important defenseman on the team. A great leader on and off the ice, Lindgren may be a dark horse for the captaincy.
The Rangers may take some time to announce their next captain. After all, they have more important things to worry about as far as turning this season around. The new captain will be named when the organization is ready but it may be beneficial to name one as soon as possible. They have four assistant captains who are leading this team for now and, until things turn around, it may remain that way for the unforeseeable future.
