Puck possession at 5-on-5 has become a critical part of today’s game and a key indicator of a team’s success. While goals win games, being able to control the puck is crucial in ensuring that your team maintains momentum and secures the victory.
Absolute puck possession minutes are not publicly reported on a team basis, so to determine a team's puck possession at 5-on-5, Corsi for percentage (CF%) is used.
CF% shows the percentage of shots directed at the opposing team’s net, showing that said team is in control of the puck. Corsi for percentage is calculated by dividing the team's total number of shot attempts by the total Corsi for both teams.
So, which teams had the most control 5-on-5, according to MoneyPuck.com, and how did they do in the 2024-25 season?
5th overall: LA Kings

The Los Angeles Kings had the fifth-best 5-on-5 CF% during the 2024-25 season, with a Corsi For Percentage of 53.24%. Strong defence plays a big role in the Kings’ possession success. Last season, Vladislav Gavrikov led the Kings' defence with a plus-minus of +26 before signing with the Rangers during the off-season. Joel Edmundson followed close behind with +25.
The Kings also use the 1-3-1 neutral zone trap to prevent the opposition from gaining momentum. While the play may be criticised for being boring and slowing down gameplay, it remains in use for its ability to shut down opposing offences and force turnovers.
4th overall: Edmonton Oilers

When your captain is one of the best players in the world, you are bound to rank high on the offence and puck possession scale. The team had a CF% of 54.09% in the 2024-25 season. Depending on where you look, Connor McDavid’s personal CF% is anywhere from 60% to 65%, which is in the top 10 in the NHL amongst all players. The Oilers are an offensive powerhouse with Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman. Their puck possession was on full display during the 2025 playoffs, especially during round one against the LA Kings.
3rd overall: Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche had a CF% of 54.12%, putting them slightly above the Edmonton Oilers and in third place. One of the Avalanche's keys to puck possession is puck-moving defence. Cale Makar is one of the best defencemen in the league. He can control the puck and set the pace for the rest of the Avalanche. The Avalanche utilise this puck movement and a five-man attack to stretch the opposing defence thin. This five-man attack utilises all the available space on the ice, leading to more open room for passes and playmaking.
2nd overall: Florida Panthers

The back-to-back Stanley Cup champions had a CF% of 55.52%, placing them in second place. To win one championship, let alone two, you need control of the game and the puck. These are two things that the Florida Panthers have done well in the last two years. With players like Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett, Carter Verhaeghe, and Sam Reinhart, skill and aggression are not things the Panthers are lacking. Under Paul Maurice, the Florida Panthers have struck a balance between fast-paced plays and pure force, making them one of the most entertaining teams in the league.
1st overall: Carolina Hurricanes

With an impressive CF% of 59.14% the Carolina Hurricanes had the best 5-on-5 puck possession in the league, and it was not even close. This is in part thanks to Rod Brind'Amour’s emphasis on short shifts, aggressive forechecking, and constant movement in the offensive zone. Leading these plays on ice is defenceman Jalen Chatfield, who finished the 2024-25 season with a plus-minus of +26. Alongside Chatfield, centers Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis led the team in points and showed off their elite play making skills.
Last overall: Chicago Blackhawks

You can't examine the best teams without looking at the worst. With a CF% of 44.1% the Chicago Blackhawks had the lowest puck possession in the league. However, the future is not bleak for Chicago. They have players with great talent including Connor Bedard and Ryan Donato, who led the team in points during the 2024-25 season.
