Jonathan Toews' return to the NHL could go down as one of the most anticipated returns to the league for a long time, and as the multi-time Cup-winning champ opens a new chapter in Winnipeg, what would constitute a successful return for Toews, and how big of an impact can he really have for a cup hungry Winnipeg this season?
Toews spent 15 years with the Blackhawks, becoming a consistent 20-goal scorer, but more importantly, one of the greatest captains in the NHL. After leaving the game in 2023 to pursue a 'healing journey' due to ongoing COVID-19 issues, Toews began to train in Arizona with esteemed hockey coach Boris Dorozhenko back in late June of this year in pursuit of a return to the league, and after signing a one-year, $2 million deal with the Winnipeg Jets, his return was something to get excited for.
Whether he is a second line leader, third line forechecker, or a powerplay demon, the Jets are getting a professional, veteran, and experienced hockey player who can adapt to any situation on the ice. He has been there and done everything there has to be done in the NHL, but what would make the season a solid return for himself? Jumping back in and scoring 20 goals as a 37 year old who has been away from the game for two year would be massive for him, but scoring anywhere from the range of 40-50 points would be exactly what he is looking for, and is probably the standard for a player like himself.
If Toews can instantly come in and put up number like the likes of Cole Perfetti and Gabriel Vilardi who both put up 50+ last season, it would be a massive success for Toews, and an extremely successful gamble by the Jets.
But not only is it his numbers on paper which will make it a solid year for Toews. If he can apply his leadership and experience to his role for the Jets, and if he can make those around him look championship caliber, his return will not only look sensational on the stat sheet, but certainly as a long-lasting effect on their younger players. Toews knows what its like to win, and he knows what it takes to win, and if he can take his values and apply them to the Jets instantly, his role with never look in doubt.
The goal is definitely to earn another contract at the end of the season, but for Toews, improvement, meeting the standards, and taking leadership ands accountability like he once did is something that would definitely go down as a success in his book.
