2016 NHL Draft: Stepan Falkovsky Put Himself on the Radar for Belarus at World Juniors.  His Draft Stock has Continued to Climb in Second Half

At the 2016 World Junior Championship, Belarus was not seen as a skilled team. With almost all of their skaters being no-name players the hockey world had not heard of until the tournament in late December and early January. One name that stuck with fans as Belarus was bounced out of the tournament was defender Stepan Falkovsky, who is eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft.

A mammoth of a defenseman, Falkovsky stands 6’7″. His size is a big factor in his physical and defensive play, but it also gives him an extremely impressive shot from the point; however it is one he can work on since he has troubles getting shots through.

"“A gigantic two-way defenceman that displays good offensive and defensive instincts. Quicker decision making is something he will have to work on, but he has already shown progress as he develops into a reliable two-way player. Excellent shot and passing ability in the offensive end. Becoming more physical and can create separation decisively. Proactive defensively and shows good instincts when moving the puck out. All-in-all, a poised and reliable defenceman that has the potential to develop into a strong, physical two-way player.” – Curtis Joe, Elite Prospects 2015"

More from NHL Draft

As the season moved along for the Ottawa 67’s, Falkovsky’s role on the blueline became more important and his structured two-way became more and more relied on. As a result, his confidence has boosted and Falkovsky has started to take more chances and become more creative with the puck.

Falkovsky developed into a better player and while he made mistakes at times, his stock in the upcoming draft has without a doubt increased since his fantastic 2016 World Junior performance.

Speed and agility are also very strong assets for Falkovksy despite his large stature. Quick feet are a great thing for any defenseman to have, but to add that to his frame is quite impressive.

Falkovsky can also make a great first pass out or a breakout by himself. Knowing what to do with the puck after a transition is a parallel with his above average hockey IQ.

"“Falkovsky has grown by leaps and bounds during the current OHL campaign. His confidence with the puck is showing up with every added game. He was off the radar to start the season. Coming over from Europe as a 19 year-old made him an unknown entity. Expect him to continue to ascend up the rankings leading into the draft. A late second or third round selection would not be surprising. Falkovsky obviously has the size to play in the NHL, but he will also have the skating and sense as he continues to improve. A realistic slot for this sleeping giant to awaken into would be a third pairing and penalty killing role.” – Hockey Prospectus"

Doubtful to be a first round selection, Falkovsky will see himself walk across the draft stage during the second day in Buffalo. A late second round team would be more than happy to scoop him up.
