NHL Pacific Division #3 Calgary

"“This club really surprised me last year and it seems they have only gotten better with the additions of Michael Frolik and Dougie Hamilton. I think the playoff experience last season will do this club some good, but the goalie slot still seems to be a spot of weakness.” – Martin Strachan, Staff Writer"

Calgary looked like they were still in the early stages of a rebuild, but surprised everyone this past season. Many analysts thought that it was a lucky season for the Flames. With 97 points, they would not have earned a wildcard spot and were only 2 points ahead of the Kings to squeak into a playoff spot as 3rd in the NHL Pacific Division. Furthermore, they went on to face one of the softer teams in the playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks.

"“The Dougie Hamilton trade was an incredible deal and Michael Frolik is a great addition too. They have benefited from lot of luck at times, but prospects will improve and new additions will help to keep their hold on 3rd place.” – Jason Feddema, Staff Writer"

When it came to statistics, the analytics crowd found it to be a lucky season as well. The Calgary Flames had the second highest shooting percentage at 10.52%, while the average shooting percentage was 8.90%. They came out on top in a lot of close games, with an average goals for of 2.89/game and average goals against of 2.60. When it came to shots the Flames kept it fairly close, but were still outshot by 1.7/game on average. Some were calling for Calgary to be the next Colorado this season.

Regardless of luck, the Flames had great coaching and the team bought into his system. In recognition, Bob Hartley won the Jack Adams award. Further, the Flames had very strong defense. This offseason the Flames brought in some pretty great additions with Dougie Hamilton and Michael Frolik. These factors, along with the further development of the younger players on the Flames, may just offset any statistical regression that some expect.

"“Calgary upgraded their defense getting Dougie Hamilton for draft picks. Mark Giordano will come back healthy and Michael Frolik will help the offense. If the goaltending takes another step, the Flames are legitimate contenders to win the Western Conference.” – Adam Savard, Staff Writer"
