Toronto Maple Leafs F P-A Parenteau: NHL Trade Deadline Profile
Toronto Maple Leafs F P-A Parenteau was originally selected by Anaheim 264th overall (9th round) back in 2001.
Pierre-Alexandre spent the next two seasons with QMJHL Chicoutimi and Sherbrooke, producing slightly below two points-per-game. He put up 118 points in 68 games in 2001-02 with Chicoutimi, followed by 103 points in 59 games between Chicoutimi/Sherbrooke.
Starting his pro career in 2003-04 with AHL Cincinnati, P-A Parenteau spent nearly six years in the minors before his NHL career took off.
He was eventually traded in December 2006 to Chicago. Following his NHL debut (a five game stint with the Blackhawks in 2006-07), P-A was traded to New York in October 2007 for “future considerations”.

Joining AHL Hartford in 2007-08, Parenteau had a breakout season, producing 81 points in 75 games. He followed that up in 2008-09 with 78 points in 74 games. The production continued in 2009-10, with P-A accumulating 45 points in 35 games with Hartford. Getting a longer NHL look, Parenteau appeared in 22 games, and scored three goals, adding five helpers (eight points).
Signing with the New York Islanders in 2010-11, Pierre-Alexandre played his first full NHL season, scoring 20 goals, with 33 assists (53 points) in 81 games. As he’d done everywhere along the lines, Parenteau added to his totals in year two, tallying 18 goals, 49 assists (67 points) in 2011-12 – a career-high.
Eventually squeezed out in Long Island, Parenteau signed with the Colorado Avalanche in 2012-13. He appeared in all 48 games during the lock-out shortened season, and finished among NHL points leaders with 18 goals, 25 assists (43 points). Battling injuries in 2013-14, P-A appeared in 55 games, producing 14 goals, 19 assists (33 points).
He was traded the following summer, along with a draft pick to Montreal in exchange for Daniel Briere. Parenteau only appeared in 56 games for the Habs, underwhelming with eight goals and 14 assists.
Parenteau was signed by Toronto last summer after a buy-out in Montreal. It was a cheap low-risk one-year deal. For Toronto Maple Leafs F P-A Parenteau, it was an opportunity to prove the 32-year-old still has plenty left in the tank. Staying healthy in 2015-16, Parenteau has 16 goals, 16 assists (32 points) in 60 games so far.
Here’s a guy you can stick up and down anywhere in the lineup. For a strong playoff bound team, P-A Parenteau is best suited to step into a third line role, and should be an instantaneous upgrade for most teams.
via Sportsnet,
Ah yes, Saturday. That’s in Montreal against the Habs, a team that bought Parenteau out of the final year of his $4-million-per-season contract last summer, taking a $1.33-million hit on their salary cap this year and next just to be rid of him.
A concussion set Parenteau back last season, and he just couldn’t make it work with coach Michel Therrien, who as the season progressed gave his ice time away to Dale Wiese.
The Leafs gave him a chance to resuscitate his career, which really didn’t start until almost a decade after he was drafted into the NHL. After a slow start last fall, he’s done just that.
“I made it (to the NHL) pretty late,” said Parenteau, who has a good shot at topping his career high of 20 goals. “I feel like I have a lot left in the tank, hopefully the rest of the league and the Leafs see it that way, too.”
Toronto Maple Leafs F P-A Parenteau currently carries an annual cap hit of $1.5 million dollars. Toronto is in a great position to retain max salary from remaining contracts being shipped out – which ultimately increases the trade value.
