While Carolina lacks elite talent, New Jersey has at least two top-level players.
Trading for Taylor Hall and only giving up Adam Larsson was massively impressive. That’s no knock on the ability of Larsson – he’s a perfectly reasonable defenseman, who could develop into a shutdown star. But Hall is a quality left-winger who was underappreciated on a bad Edmonton side. He gets kudos for not requesting a trade earlier.
Having Hall on the top line should push Adam Henrique to improve. Coming off his first 30 goal season, he will be expected to do more creating than scoring. Their depth scoring outside of the top line is worrying, only six players last season recorded more than 20 points!
Damon Severson will be expected to develop into a top-two defenseman. Having him allowed the Devils to be more relaxed about letting Larsson go. Stanley Cup winner Ben Lovejoy will add some solidity, but there is a severe lack of scoring from the blue line.
Cory Schneider is a top five goaltender in the league, even with a porous defense in front of him. Since becoming a regular in the league, his save percentage has never dropped below .920 in a season. Incredible.
