Top Defenseman: Tyson Barrie (24gp 2g 10a 12pts)
Top Rookie: Mikko Rantanen (19gp 3g 8a 11pts)
Top Goaltender: Calvin Pickard (4 wins 2.44GAA .920 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Nathan MacKinnon (3gp 1g 1a 2pts)

Colorado’s week eight was painful, going 0-3-0 and not one player registering more than two points. Nathan MacKinnon, Tyson Barrie, and Matt Duchene combined for six points each and a minus eight. Semyon Varlamov wasn’t great either, posting a 3.09 goals-against-average and a .911 save percentage in all three losses.

Week nine needs to be a rebound week for Colorado but if they manage to turn things around is yet to be known. They have games against Boston, Toronto, and Philadelphia. Depending on how they play, they should manage to get four points on the week. But the teams they’re facing are not pushovers either, so Colorado’s week nine could also be a down week as well.

Weekly Prospect Profile: C/LW Tyson Jost, Univ. Of North Dakota (NCAA)

2016-17 stats: 16gp 7g 010 17pts

Another top prospect and future star for Colorado, Tyson Jost is a very crafty goal scorer. Tyson can play at a very fast tempo and think just as quick as well. This makes him a very solid offensive catalyst, who can see the ice very, very well with the willingness and determination to win the tough battles. He’s an offensive dynamo that once ready, will easily be a top-six forward in the NHL.

Top Goaltender: Mike Smith (4 wins 2.77GAA .924 save percentage)

Player of the Week: D Oliver Ekman-Larsson (4gp 0g 3a 3pts)

Arizona continues to tread water with another lousy week. They played four games over the last seven days and managed just a single point going 0-3-1. Now sitting at 8-13-4 through 25 games, the Coyotes are in competition with the Colorado Avalanche for the worst record in the NHL. The Avs have one less point with a game in hand heading into Thursday’s action.

Let’s discuss Mike Smith for a moment. He showed a ton of promise upon returning from injury. Other than allowing four goals on 17 shots in his second start, Smith provided four strong outings allowing two or fewer goals. Unfortunately, he’s now allowed four goals in two of his last three starts. Here’s the thing folks: Mike Smith is an incredibly streaky goaltender. Other than a couple of solid seasons, he’s very inconsistent. I’m not sure how much of that has to do with his propensity for getting hurt, but nonetheless, it’s a tough guy to win games with. He might be better suited as a second option in a tandem.

Both Martin Hanzal and Anthony Duclair continue to swirl in trade rumors. Given his down play, it’s difficult to imagine another GM paying the premium to acquire Duclair. That being said, if the right offer comes along, who knows. These analytical teams think a bit differently and hence operate differently from the norm.

Here are two hypothetical trades involving each player that could make sense for both clubs:

Arizona trades F Martin Hanzal to Montreal in exchange for G Zach Fucale, F Sven Andrighetto, and a draft pick

Arizona trades F Anthony Duclair to NY Islanders in exchange for G Jean-Francois Berube, F Michael Dal Colle, and a 1st round draft pick

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Kyle Wood, Tucson (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 16gp 4g 12a 16pts

There’s plenty of reason to be exciting if you’re a Coyotes fan. They’ve got a plethora of young talent just waiting to break through. Sitting just behind Anthony DeAngelo (and not far back) is former North Bay Battalion (OHL) Kyle Wood. The giant 6’5 223lbs right-handed defender joined AHL Tucson for his first year of pro hockey in 2016-17. Known as an offensively gifted blueliner, Wood is already producing at a point-per-game pace. If he can further develop his defensive game, Kyle could have a bright future in Arizona.

Top Goaltender: Thomas Greiss (5 wins 2.47GAA .919 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F John Tavares (3gp 1g 2a 3pts)

The Islanders had a very solid week eight going 2-0-1. One of their biggest wins came against the Washington Capitals when they shut them out by a score of 3-0. John Tavares had a good week as well, while posting three points he also managed an even rating.

Jaroslav Halak turned play around which was much needed for the team. He posted a 2-0-1 record with a .945 save percentage and a 1.99 goals-against-average. Josh Bailey also had himself a three point week despite being a minus one. Anders Lee was solid as he registered two points while being a plus three. The Islanders start off week nine with a tough contest right out of the gate as they face the St. Louis Blues. After that, they face the surging Columbus Blue Jackets, then the Washington Capitals once again.

Weekly Prospect Profile: LW/C Michael Dal Colle, Bridgeport (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 22gp 7g 4a 11pts

Michael Dal Colle is extremely gifted offensively, he’s a pure sniper with an amazing sense of the game. His shot release makes him capable of beating goalies anywhere in the offensive zone. He also has a big body which will come in handy when he’s ready for the NHL, his outstanding puck protection skills will help as well.

Top Goaltender: Ryan Miller (5 wins 2.73GAA .911 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Daniel Sedin/Henrik Sedin (3gp 2g 1a 3pts)

It was another disappointing week for the Vancouver Canucks. They went 1-2-0 in their three games, but at least they got some revenge on the Maple Leafs in a 3-2 shootout win on Saturday.

Again, the Canucks are still struggling to score goals. On the bright side, the Sedin twins had a productive week, which is hopefully a sign of things to come. But as many suspected, this team is struggling with secondary scoring. I thought a guy like Anton Rodin might help a lot in that regard. 26 games though and Rodin is still on the shelf with no immediate return in sight.

A guy that is expected to return soon is Jannik Hansen. He has missed the last 14 games, but had a decent start back in October posting two goals, four assists in the first 12 contests. At the very least, Hansen should be able to help in the secondary scoring department. All Vancouver needs to do now is get Bo Horvat rolling again after a quiet week.

Weekly Prospect Profile: G Thatcher Demko, Utica (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 6-4-1 2.52GAA .911 save percentage

Widely regarded as the top goaltending prospect in hockey, Thatcher Demko is off to a hot start in his first year of pro. He has a winning record thus far with solid numbers and gives hopes to a Canucks fan base that needs something to hold on to right now. We’re not just looking at a future NHL starter here, we’re talking about a guy with a legitimate shot at being one of those elite netminders. Let’s just hope Jim Benning doesn’t screw things up too badly.

Top Goaltender: Cam Ward (8 wins 2.22GAA .920 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Derek Ryan (4gp 0g 3a 3pts)

Carolina had an interesting week to say the least, three of their four games were decided in overtime. They also put up a record of 1-1-2. With Jordan Staal and Elias Lindholm out of the lineup, Cam Ward, Jeff Skinner, and rookie Derek Ryan really stepped up in week eight, where they managed to grind it out with four very tough teams.

This week, however, Carolina must dig deeper to have a better outcome than week eight. Because the week’s not going to be easy on them since they play Los Angeles, San Jose, and Vancouver. The games verses the Kings and Sharks should be losses in all rights, but the Vancouver contest they may be able to squeeze a win out and earn two points on the week. While they have climbed this week (due to being able to grind it out with four of the best teams) they can easily fall in the rankings after week nine.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Haydn Fleury, Charlotte (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 17gp 1g 3a 4pts

Haydn is a serious defensive prospect, one thing he’s always needed to do was add size, which he did last year in Red Deer and this year so far in Charlotte. While his offensive numbers have seen a decline, his defensive play has increased dramatically. He’s not the most physical defenseman, in Carolina’s prospect pool, but his skating ability is definitely near the top.

Player of the Week: G Kari Lehtonen (2gp 1w 1l 0otl .953 save percentage 1.01GAA)

Dallas didn’t have a great week eight, is was almost .500, they had a 1-2-0 record over the span of seven days. Tyler Seguin was easily the best player of the week notching three points but unfortunately, he was also a minus one. Jamie Benn was pretty much invisible only having one assist as well as an even rating. Kari Lehtonen, on the other hand, did post some pretty amazing numbers despite winning a game and also losing one.

Unlike Lehtonen, Niemi was terrible in week eight. He lost the only game he played in while posting a .872 save percentage and a 5.01 goals-against-average. Rookie Devin Shore had himself a solid week scoring two points as well as being a plus three. Dallas is going to need goal-tending to step up, cause week nine isn’t going to be easy since they have games against Nashville, Anaheim, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Which game(s) they win is an unknown since all these teams are currently on a streak and Dallas is capable of bouncing back.

Weekly Prospect Profile: C/LW Jason Dickinson, Texas (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 13gp 4g 6a 10pts

Jason Dickinson has already played one game in the NHL, and in doing so he also scored his first goal. Which isn’t surprising given his offensive traits. While he posses’ soft hands, he’s strong on his stick making his puck protection skills perfect. He has a good, quick shit with a very accurate release. He’s a strong two-way forward who doesn’t slack on the back-check.

Top Goaltender: Chad Johnson (11 wins 2.04GAA .931 save percentage)

Player of the Week: G Chad Johnson (4w 1.47GAA .953 save percentage)

The Calgary Flames are one of hottest teams in the NHL right now. Much of it can be accredited to outstanding play between the pipes by Chad Johnson. But it certainly doesn’t hurt getting your star forward back from injury well ahead of schedule.

Johnson won all four starts in the last seven days posting a 1.47GAA and .953 save percentage while stopping 121 of 127 shots over that span. He has taken a hold over the Flames starter role now with 11 wins, a 2.04GAA, and .931 save percentage so far.

How quickly things can change. Just a week ago, we were wondering what was wrong with Sean Monahan. Things got so bad that Glen Gulutzan had the talented center briefly on the fourth line. It seems the only thing he needed was his buddy Johnny Hockey. Both had a goal and an assist each in the last two contests, which gives Monahan six points over his last four games. In fact, Sean Monahan is on a five-game, seven-point streak.

There’s still a long way to go in 2016-17, but it seems the Flames finally have the ship headed in the right direction. If they can keep their winning ways going, they might be able to challenge for a Wild-Card spot.

Weekly Prospect Profile: LW Andrew Mangiapane, Stockton (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 17gp 5g 9a 14pts

At 5’10 182lbs, Mangiapane has long been criticized for his size. Fortunately for Andrew, the NHL is trending towards the smaller player. He has proven he can play a bigger game and hang with the big boys during his CHL days, which seems to have translated early on at the pro level with AHL Stockton. The Flames might snagged a gem with this late 6th round pick in 2015 who could evolve into a top nine forward.

Top Goaltender: Frederik Andersen (10 wins 2.87GAA .911 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Tyler Bozak (2gp 1g 1a 2pts)

The pickings were slim this week for player of the week honors given the Maple Leafs light schedule. They played a pair of games, dropping the first one in a shootout loss to Vancouver in the much-anticipated rematch. Toronto lost their second game versus Minnesota on Wednesday. Heading into Thursday (Dec.8) night, Toronto is sitting at the very bottom of the Atlantic Division following the recent surge from Buffalo after the return of Jack Eichel.

Toronto made headlines recently as they waived backup goaltender Jhonas Enroth. It should come as little surprise given his sloppy start to the year. Rumors are now suggesting that Karri Ramo, who signed a PTO the other day, was intended to be the backup all along had it not been for his offseason recovery. Ramo took a lot of criticism last year and Calgary, and rightfully so. But of that mess of netminders (Jonas Hiller, Karri Ramo, and Joni Ortio), Ramo was the only one who got managed to get his game together. That is until he landed on the IR with a season-ending injury. If Karri does indeed sign with the Maple Leafs, he will be a much better second option behind Frederik Andersen.

One last note. Toronto won a long fought battle on Wednesday in their arbitration case with defenseman Jared Cowen. The victory is significant because it means a $650k cap credit in 2016-17 and $750k in 2017-18. It might not seem like much, but it could be the difference maker to getting a deal done comes trade deadline.

Weekly Prospect Profile: LW Brendan Leipsic, Toronto (AHL)

2016-17 stats:21gp 7g 19a 26pts

At 5’9 170lbs, Leipsic is undersized by NHL standards, but then again, the league is trending that way. A gifted playmaker, Brendan Leipsic is also a feisty competitor that can be a bit of an agitator. He might not have the same offensive upside as a guy like Brendan Gallagher, but plays a similar styled game. After posting 54 points in 65 games with the Marlies in 2015-16, Brendan is off to a hot start among the league leaders in AHL scoring with 26 points in 21 games.

Player of the Week: F Anze Kopitar (2gp 0g 5a 5pts)

The Kings only played a pair of games over the last seven days. They beat the Coyotes 4-3 last Thursday and fell short 5-4 to the Canadiens in a shootout on Sunday. Captain Anze Kopitar had a monster week helping carry the offensive with five assists in two games. He racked up a pair versus the Coyotes and three more against Montreal, bringing his season total up to 14 points in 20 games. Still, two goals at the start of December is a bit low for a guy coming off a 25-goal campaign in 2015-16. In fact, he’s topped 25 or more goals on five occasions in his career. LA will need a little more from their all-star two-way center.

Los Angeles also crept into the headlines recently with rumors they may be interested in UFA goaltender Karri Ramo. He has been skating with the Maple Leafs for awhile and was recently signed to a professional tryout contract. Logic would dictate he will be the replacement for Jhonas Enroth, who was waived earlier this week by Toronto, but LA could swoop in similar to what Calgary did with Kris Versteeg.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Michael Mersch, Ontario (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 17gp 4g 8a 12pts

Selected 110th overall (4th round) back in 2011, Mersch is an American-born forward who stands 6’2 218lbs. A power forward, Michael plays a responsible two-way game with a bit of offensive flair. He’s coming off 43 points in 52 games with AHL Ontario in 2015-16 and got his first taste of NHL action appearing in 17 games for the Kings. The 24-year-old could be a useful bottom six forward in the very near future.

Florida is 1-1-3 since firing Gerard Gallant. It didn’t go over well with many folks in the hockey world, despite the fact that most saw it coming. Don Cherry went as far as calling it the “worst firing in NHL history”. We get it, the Panthers management team is a small market club looking for a way to compete in a tough league. Then again, they did just spend over $250 million dollars in the offseason for this new analytical approach.

Here’s the thing: analytics don’t have the same effectiveness in hockey as they do baseball. It doesn’t mean there isn’t a use for them in the game, but we certainly should be building teams using these advanced numbers. When stats tell you it’s a good idea to trade Erik Gudbranson because his analytics aren’t very good, that should be a red flag. Oh well, looks like the Panthers and Coyotes are destined to learn the hard way.

Weekly Prospect Profile: G Samuel Montembeault, Blainville-Boisbriand (QMJHL)

2016-17 stats: 11-3-0 1.85GAA .933 save percentage

At 6’3 195lbs, Samuel Montembeault certainly has the size that NHL teams are looking for in a goaltender nowadays. His numbers in the QMJHL have been outstanding over the last four seasons, including a 17-19-8 record with a 2.63GAA and .901 save percentage. Those are pretty impressive statistics on a losing team. He still has some work to do before he’s ready for the NHL, but the Panthers could have a potential future starter in this young man.

Player of the Week: F Ryan Kesler (4gp 4g 1a 5pts)

Anaheim had a fairly successful week going 2-1-1. They did manage to find themselves on the wrong end of an ugly 8-3 final versus Calgary earlier in the week though. That being said, five of eight points is a decent result.

Starter John Gibson had a solid start to the week. He shut the door stopping 27 of 28 shots for the win in Vancouver. Then, two night later, allowed three goals on 32 shots for another two points. After a few days off, the American netminder took a beating at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes. He allowed five goals on 34 shots, the first time he’s conceded that many in over a month. Luckily, he got the win in a 6-5 shootout final.

Looking to our performers, it seems center Ryan Kesler is taking home back-to-back POW honors. He was a factor in all four contests, finding the back of the net in Edmonton, Calgary (x2), and again at home vs. Carolina. With the four goals and one assist over the last seven days, Kesler now has 21 points on the season. Corey Perry also had a productive week with one goal, three assists. He now has 20 points in 2016-17. Jakub Silfverberg continued his hot play as he too had a goal and three assists. With his recent surge, the two-way winger is now up to 17 points in 27 games. The last performer of note is depth winger Andrew Cogliano. He had two goals, two assists, bringing his season total to 14 points already.

The Ducks find themselves in a five-team battle (Edmonton, San Jose, Anaheim, Calgary, Los Angeles) in the Pacific Division. Heading into Thursday (Dec.8) night, each of these clubs sit within four points of one another.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Brandon Montour, San Diego (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 18gp 5g 11a 16pts

The 2nd round selection from 2014 had a solid AHL rookie campaign in 2015-16 posting 57 points in 68 games. An offensively gifted defender, Montour is still working to develop his defensive play in his own end. He’s yet to make his NHL debut with Anaheim, but depending how the year plays out in terms of injuries, he might get a few games in.

Top Goaltender: Anders Nilsson (5 wins 2.38GAA ..932 save percentage)

Player of the Week: D Rasmus Ristolainen (4gp 1g 4a 5pts)

How big of a loss was Jack Eichel early in the year? Perhaps back-to-back two points games (four points) in his return tells a bit of the story. He was left off the scoresheet in the Sabres next two games but tallied a helper in Tuesday’s OT win versus Edmonton.

All in all, Buffalo had a fairly solid week going 2-1-1 over the last seven days. They collected wins against the NY Rangers and Edmonton and squeezed an extra point out of Washington in a 3-2 OT loss. The lone regulation loss came at the hands of Boston in a low-scoring 2-1 affair.

Despite a shaky goals-against-average, both Anders Nilsson and Robin Lehner had another solid week. Nilsson notched both wins with a 3.00GAA and .903 save percentage. Lehner went winless, but had better numbers with a 2.48GAA and .924 save percentage. It’s clear that Lehner is the top option moving forward, but Nilsson is providing a surprising spark after a disappointing 2015-16 campaign. He’s proven he can step in and give his team a chance to win on any given night.

Even though several players had a great week on the scoresheet, I’d like to center out this week’s POW. Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen got off to a slow start in 2016-17 but he’s starting to turn things on offensively over the last couple of weeks. He has eight points in his last eight games, the same total he put up through his first 18 contests.

Weekly Prospect Profile: RW Vaclav Karabacek, Elmira (ECHL)

2016-17 stats: 6gp 3g 5a 8pts

After splitting his final year of junior (QMJHL) between Baie-Comeau and Moncton, Karabacek made the jump to pro hockey in 2016-17. Instead of joining AHL Rochester, the 2014 2nd rounder began the year down in Elmira (ECHL). He’s scoring above a point-per-game pace already and seems to be producing stats that might suggest he’s a playmaker. Make no mistake, Vaclav Karabacek is a pure goal scorer. He just needs to become a more complete player before he’s ready for a serious look at the big club.

Player of the Week: G Devan Dubnyk (3gp 2w 1.59GAA, .948 save percentage)

Devan Dubnyk keeps taking the league by storm this season, posting ridiculous numbers week in and week out. He’s also carrying the Wild to the top of the tough Central division. And week eight went exactly as planned for the club as they posted a 2-0-1 record over the last seven days.

While Dubnyk has been outstanding, so has Eric Staal, Charlie Coyle, and Ryan Suter. Having everyone on board is a key factor to success. And it seems to be that way in Minnesota. They’ll also have to continue this trend into week nine as they play games against Edmonton, St. Louis and Florida. The toughest game of the week is obviously the St. Louis contest, but don’t be surprised if the falling Oilers give the Wild a run for their money.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Mike Reilly, Iowa (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 11gp 1g 8a 9pts

Mike is still getting used to the professional game, which he will get to learn more of in the AHL. He’s still a good puck-moving defenseman with great vision and a good shot. However, he does need to perfect his defensive game, which is critical for the NHL. He’s also a force on the power play and likes to join the rush to create another chance for his team.

Top Goaltender: Pekka Rinne (11 wins 2.23GAA .926 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Mike Ribeiro (3gp 0g 4a 4pts)

Nashville posted a .500 week going 1-1-1 over the last seven days. While off to a slow start losing twice, they finished with a 4-3 win over Colorado on Tuesday. Mike Ribeiro had four points and was also a plus one. Pekka Rinne and Juuse Saros were not hot however. Pekka won one and lost another while posting a .840 save percentage and a 3.87 goals-against-average. Saros on the other hand had a .889 save percentage and a 3.08 goals-against-average. Not very solid numbers at all from a team who is supposed to contend in the playoffs.

Nashville’s first game in week eight came against New Jersey in a 5-4 overtime loss. Then lost in regulation against Philadelphia by a score of 4-2. Week nine Nashville is going to have to tighten up in the crease to be successful. Cause they have games against Dallas, Arizona and St. Louis. In all likely-hood though the Predators should be able to get the win in Arizona. Winning in Dallas and St. Louis will be more of a challenge and require the entire team to be in top form.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Dante Fabbro, Boston Univ. (NCAA)

2016-17 stats: 14gp 3g 3a 6pts

A very dependable two-way defenseman, Dante Fabbro has high offensive upside. He plays like he’s already a pro, his poise, and mature-like attitude allows him to make great decisions while under pressure. His shot is hard and quick with no issue of hitting the net on a consistent basis. He’s a complete defenseman that can play at an elite level at both ends of the ice.

Top Goaltender: Connor Hellebuyck (10 wins 2.67GAA .910 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Patrik Laine (4gp 4g 2a 6pts)

What is there to be said about Patrik Laine? Is this kid a stud or what? 25 points through 29 games as well as being tied for the goal scoring lead with Sidney Crosby. Patrik is definitely making a case for rookie of the year. He also had a solid week eight as well scoring six points and being a plus two. Michael Hutchinson was absolutely amazing as well in his only game gathering the win. He also had a .923 save percentage and a 1.65 goals-against-average.

Despite quite a few players having tremendous weeks, Winnipeg only had a 2-1-1 record. Winnipeg’s Hellebuyck experiment is still not going as planned since his numbers haven’t been bouncing up and down every other week. Michael Hutchinson is also proving to be a somewhat solid backup, but like Hellebuyck, his numbers tend to have the same trend by going up and down week in and week out. They need to find consistent goaltending for them to make the playoffs this season. Week nine should be a competitive week for the Jets as they have games in New York (Rangers), Calgary and Edmonton. Their easiest contest should in all aspects come against the Flames, so expect two points out of the possible six.

Weekly Prospect Profile: C Jansen Harkins, Prince George (WHL)

2016-17 stats: 23gp 6g 23a 29pts

Being compared to Boston forward David Krejci is never a bad thing. Jansen Harkins is a very solid two-way center who makes high-percentage plays in every area of the ice. He’s not just a good shot, he’s also a great passer as well. His endless play-making ability makes him a constant threat, and a serious prospect for the Jets already amazingly youthful team.

Travis Zajac and the Devils had an amazing week eight, while the Devils went 2-0-1, Zajac had six points to go along with a plus-three rating. While both Cory Schneider and Keith Kinkaid earned a win each, Keith had the better numbers on the week.

New Jersey kicked off their week with an overtime loss to Chicago, but rebounded two nights later to beat Nashville in overtime by a score of 5-4. Their other win came from a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Week nine, however, may be a little different for the Devils as they have games in Montreal, St. Louis and the Rangers. Two strong teams and one ready for a rebound week. New Jersey has to be on top of their game to get points in week nine.

Weekly Prospect Profile: C/RW Blake Speers, Sault Ste. Marie (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 1gp 0g 0a 0pts

There’s no surprise that Blake Speers was given a Team Canada World Junior invite this year, his talents are at elite levels. His slick hands make for great puck-handling skills as well as passes. And that’s not all, he can also shoot the puck with the best of them. Once he gains more size, however, he’ll be able to finish plays along the boards a lot better. He has all the right tools in his bag, only downside is he needs to be in the right position.

San Jose had a very quiet week with only a pair of games on the schedule. They opened things up on Friday night playing host to the Montreal Canadiens. The Sharks came out on top in a close 2-1 final. Five nights later, on Wednesday night, SJ played host to another Canadian team, the Ottawa Senators. The surging Sens came out on top in a close 4-2 game.

Among the biggest performers in those two games; veteran Joe Thornton and captain Joe Pavelski stand out above the rest. Both racked up three points over those two contests, giving Pavelski 24 points on the year, while Thornton is up to 16. Early Norris Trophy candidate Brent Burns also had a solid week scoring a pair of goals. He now has 11 goals, 12 assists (23 points) in 26 games.

In a bit of a side news, Kevin Kurz announced a report regarding Sharks bottom six forward Matt Nieto. He doesn’t believe there’s a fit in the lineup and that he deserves a shot somewhere else with a change a scenery. Given the amount of top talent knocking at the door (both in the NHL currently and in the AHL), a list that includes Kevin LeBanc, Nikolay Goldobin, and Timo Meier (among others), it’s only a matter of time before bodies are shipped out.

Weekly Prospect Profile: RW Timo Meier, San Jose (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 14gp 8g 6a 14pts

Since starting the year on the IR after coming down with a case of mononucleosis, Meier has since been on a tear in his first year of pro hockey. The 6’1 209lbs right winger is a strong skater who is tough along the boards and not afraid to get into the dirty areas/or corners. The Swiss skater also has a knack for finding the back of the net, possessing game breaking abilities.

Player of the Week: D Erik Karlsson (4gp 3g 5a 8pts)

With starter Craig Anderson away on personal leave, the Sens turned to backup Mike Condon to carry the load over the past week. He collected a pair of wins over Florida and San Jose, including a 24-save shutout versus the Panthers. Condon stopped 90 of 95 shots over the last seven days.

The Senators had a decent week going 2-1-1. The only blemish was an 8-5 loss to the Penguins that wound up being a closer game that the score suggests. Despite a tough night in Pittsburgh, it’s important that Ottawa is starting to find the back of the net. They scored at least two goals in each of their four games.

Numerous players have stepped up to the plate in recent games. Most notably is stud defenseman Erik Karlsson, who racked up eight points in four games. The Swede hit a rough patch in early November, but has bounced back nicely with 13 points in his last 10 games. Mike Hoffman also had a nice week posting two goals, two assists. Hoffman now has five goals, three assists (eight points) in his last five games. Mark Stone is perhaps the hottest Sens forward of all right now. He had a goal and three assists over the last seven days, and now has 12 points in his last 10 games.

Ottawa is back on track with their goal of earning a playoff spot. That being said, they’re still a piece or two away from being a legitimate threat. They may want to look at adding an impact top nine forward.

Weekly Prospect Profile: RW Gabriel Gagne, Binghampton (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 2gp 0g 0a 0pts

A second-round selection back in 2015, Gagne may need several years down in Binghampton to fully develop his game. Still, there’s a lot to be excited about with this big 6’5 right winger who some scouts project to be a top six forward. He only weighs 185 pounds and it shows on the ice. Many of his biggest weaknesses can be solved with a little extra time spent in the gym, focused towards training and getting in peak physical shape. Gabriel began the 2016-17 season with ECHL Wichita (seven points in 14 games), but recently saw a promotion to Binghamton.

Top Rookie: Travis Konecny (28gp 4g 10a 14pts)
Top Goaltender: Steve Mason (10 wins 2.71GAA .908 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Claude Giroux (4gp 2g 3a 5pts)

Philadelphia’s week eight was amazing, to say the least, while going 4-0-0, they also managed to beat some very tough teams. Steve Mason was absolutely lights out, winning all four games as well as posting a 1.71 goals-against-average and a .944 save percentage. Claude Giroux wasn’t that bad either, posting five points and being a plus six.

Week eight started off with a 3-2 overtime win against Ottawa, and the wins wouldn’t stop there as they would go on to beat Nashville, Chicago, and Florida. The Flyers also have two other wins from week seven putting them on a six-game win streak. Hopefully, in week nine they can keep up the momentum. They have games against Edmonton, Dallas, Detroit and Colorado. Four games in which Philadelphia should be able to squeeze out a point, or even both considering how they’ve been playing the last two weeks.

Weekly Prospect Profile: C German Rubtsov, Vityaz Podolsk (KHL/MHL)2016-17 stats:

15gp 0g 0a 0pts/15gp 7g 8a 15pts

German Rubtsov was often compared to Pavel Datsyuk. He’s a very intelligent two-way center who will challenge you every shift. His skills, smarts and worth ethic are all top notch in all three zones of the ice. While he may not handle the puck like Datsyuk, his stick-work, decision making and smartness are pretty much identical.

Top Goaltender: Cam Talbot (13 wins 2.60GAA .914 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Leon Draisaitl (4gp 4g 1a 5pts)

Edmonton had a solid week going 2-0-2 collecting six of eight points. Things are getting tight in the Pacific Division as five teams were sitting within four points on one another at the top heading into Wednesday (Dec.7) night’s action.

Connor McDavid had another monster week with five assists in three games. That brings him up to 36 points in 28 games for a firm hold on the league lead. At this point, not only can the phenom win the Art Ross, he might just top 100 points for what should be the first of many times in his career. Leon Draisaitl also performed well adding five points of his own (four goals, one assist) in the last four games. He’s been a major benefactor playing alongside McDavid, but the Oilers could really use him at that no.2 center slot. Not to say that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins hasn’t played well, but McDavid-Draisatil would be a perfect 1-2 combo that might allow GM Peter Chiarelli an opportunity to move RNH for a better return haul than he would have brought last year.

One last note, it seems rookie Jesse Puljujarvi could be headed to the AHL. TSN analyst Jamie McLennan describes the talented Finn as a guy you can tell is almost there in terms of being an everyday NHLer. Puljujarvi might be best suited to go down for a short period of time, ride the bus, play some top minutes. He can return a little ways down the road and at that point will know what’s waiting for him should he not perform at the NHL level.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Ethan Bear, Seattle (WHL)

2016-17 stats: 25gp 10g 14a 24pts

Selected 124th overall (5th round) back in 2015, the Oilers got an absolute steal in Ethan Bear. The right-handed defender is that missing piece that Edmonton would love to have right now, but he’s likely still a few years away from making an impact. Bear is a complete all-around defenseman with a lot of offensive upside. He can make great outlet passes, carry the puck out himself, and is used to logging big minutes.

Top Goaltender: Andrei Vasilevskiy (6 wins 2.24GAA .930 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Nikita Kucherov (3gp 2g 1a 3pts)

Russian netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy dominated the crease up until now. He was yanked after the first period in St. Louis last Thursday and Ben Bishop has stolen the show ever since. It was a rough start to the year for Bishop, but he’s only allowed one goal in his last three appearances. He had an outstanding week over 162 minutes of play posting a 1.11GAA and .960 save percentage stopping 72 of 75 shots.

Up front, Nikita Kucherov continues to tear up NHL scoring. In fact, fellow Russian Alex Ovechkin said on Wednesday that he believes Kucherov can be the best ever once all is said and done. Up to 29 points in 26 games already, Nikita Kucherov shows no signs of slowing in his pursuit of Connor McDavid.

Weekly Prospect Profile: RW Taylor Raddysh, Erie (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 27gp 23g 35a 58pts

Tampa Bay could have another steal on their hands with this pick. Raddysh isn’t the most terrific skater, but he works hard with drive and determination and tends to be a menace in the offensive zone. It’s early in the junior year, but Taylor has an early lead in OHL scoring race.

Top Goaltender: Tuukka Rask (14 wins 1.79GAA .933 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F David Pastrnak (4gp 3g 2a 5pts)

Boston had a strong showing over the past week going 3-0-1. After collecting seven of eight points, the Bruins find themselves among the top teams in the Atlantic Division. Who knows if they can keep rolling, but with recent injuries to Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais, other teams like the B’s will have a chance to close the gap on the Habs.

Bruins goaltenders had a decent week. Anton Khudobin got the start last Thursday and had his best outing of the year stopping 29 of 30 shots for the win versus Carolina. Tuukka Rask followed it up with another solid start stopping 35 of 36 shots for a win against Buffalo. A couple of nights later, Rask allowed three goals on 30 shots, but still managed to collect the win. He had a tough go of things on Wednesday night vs. Washington. It was just the second time in 2016-17 that Rask allowed four or more goals as the Bruins fell short 4-3 in overtime.

One last note: Ryan Spooner’s name continues to swirl around in trade rumors. He was pretty quick to respond in stating that he hopes to remain a Bruin. This is an interesting situation given the way Boston’s depth chart shakes out. As it stands, they could lose one of Ryan Spooner, Matt Beleskey, or Jimmy Hayes in expansion, but a trade would help to protect all the necessary core assets. That being said, GM Don Sweeney isn’t giving the 24-year-old away. Off to a slow start with nine points in 26 games, Spooner is the same young man that posted 49 points just a season ago.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Jakub Zboril, Saint John (QMJHL)

2016-17 stats: 17gp 6g 10a 16pts

At 6’2 185lbs, Jakub Zboril is a quality two-way defenseman. He plays a strong, sound defensive game with a bit of physicality, but also provides an offensive spark. Zboril is a good passer, reads the play well, and can be very useful on the man-advantage. Don’t be surprised if the big Czech defender has a strong finish following the junior year with Providence, which should help pave the way for a roster spot in 2017-18.

Top Goaltender: Braden Holtby (12 wins 2.18GAA .923 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Marcus Johansson (4gp 2g 2a 4pts)

Washington’s week eight started off pretty slowly, losing their first two games before winning their last two (one of which came in overtime over Boston). All-star forward Alex Ovechkin was invisible all week only registering a single point. But Marcus Johansson carried the team in scoring putting up four points in four games despite being a minus one.

Alex Ovechkin needs to get back to form if Washington expects to make the playoffs this season and be a threat. Because Braden Holtby can’t do everything himself, even though he’s capable of doing so. Nicklas Backstrom has also been solid, showing Evgeny Kuznetsov that he’s not ready to be overlooked as the number one center just yet. Week nine should be an easy rebound week for the Capitals. They have games against Vancouver, Buffalo, and the Islanders. All three of which they should be able to win, and a chance for Alex Ovechkin to turn his play around. Because he’s way too talented to be not putting up decent numbers week in and week out.

Weekly Prospect Profile: LW/RW Christian Thomas, Hershey (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 19gp 11g 6a 17pts

Christian has bounced around the pro system quite a bit until finally landing in Washington. Which is great for the Capitals, cause he still has tremendous upside. He still posses’ explosive speed despite being on the smaller side. Luckily for him, and that speed, he rarely makes contact with other players on the ice. His puck possession and passing are decent, however. His go-to thing is making stretch passes which he’s quite good at.

Top Goaltender: Jimmy Howard (5 wins 1.82GAA .940 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Henrik Zetterberg (4gp 3g 2a 5pts)

The Red Wings opened with a game at home last Thursday before taking off for three games on the road. They were 2-1-1 with three one-goal games that resulted in extra time (overtime/or shootout). Detroit continues to hover around a .500 record and quite honestly, has done nothing to prove they’re a playoff team. Even if they sneak in with this roster, it could be another early exit. A few tweaks, possibly a trade could definitely help in their Stanley Cup quest.

After putting together a hot stretch, Jimmy Howard found himself on the shelf with an injury. It opened up a golden opportunity for Petr Mrazek to re-stake his claim on the starter role, and he actually had a decent week. He racked up a pair of wins with a 2.55GAA and .919 save percentage while stopping 91 of 99 shots.

One last note: top prospect Anthony Mantha continues to make his presence felt with another solid week. His minutes have increased significantly and he has six points in last nine games to show for it. It has been a long time coming, but it appears Mantha is finally sending a message to Red Wings management that he’s here to stay.

Weekly Prospect Profile: LW Evgeny Svechnikov, Grand Rapids (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 21gp 3g 3a 6pts

In his final year of CHL hockey, Evgeny looked like a man among boys at times with his dominant play in the offensive zone. He has an ability to completely take over games and can be extremely difficult to knock off the puck. He joined AHL Grand Rapids in 2016-17 for his first year of pro hockey and the transition seems to be going well as the Russian winger continues to progress. Don’t be surprised if he sees a bit of time with the big club before the year is out.

Top Goaltender: Henrik Lundqvist (12wins 2.55GAA .912 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Chris Kreider (3gp 2g 2a 4pts)

Surprisingly the Rangers week eight wasn’t that great despite Chris Kreider registering some solid numbers. The Rangers went 0-2-1 on the week, mostly due to Henrik Lundqvist’s bad numbers (.894 save percentage, 3.40 goals-against-average) Derek Stepan also had four points.

New York has a 50/50 week next week as they play face Chicago twice as well as games against Winnipeg and New Jersey. If Lundqvist plays up-to-par, they should by all rights be able to get the points from Winnipeg and New Jersey. However, Chicago is going to prove much tougher for the club. But if they can play to expectations they could also squeeze a win out against Chicago as well.

Weekly Prospect Profile: RW Ty Ronning, Vancouver (WHL)

2016-17 stats: 27gp 10g 12a 22pts

When Ty Ronning is on the ice, look out! he’s definitely not afraid to hit, and he will do so in bunches. His hands are excellent which is helped by his great hockey senses. Player of the Week: F Alexander Steen (3gp 1g 4a 5pts)

St. Louis had a great week eight posting a 2-0-1 record over the last seven days. Alexander Steen was on fire the whole week scoring five points in only three games. Jake Allen gathered both wins but his save percentage wasn’t something to write home about (.893). His goals-against-average was average though (2.91). Vladimir Tarasenko and Kevin Shattenkirk combined for eight points but unfortunately were also a combined minus six.

St. Louis’ week nine should be fairly easy as they kick the week off against the Islanders. After that, they play games against New Jersey, Minnesota and then finish off in Nashville. Four games in which St. Louis should be able to win. However, things will come down to goaltending like always.

Weekly Prospect Profile: RW/C Jordan Kyrou, Sarnia (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 26gp 10g 24a 34pts

Despite being left off Team Canada’s World Junior invite list this year, Jordan Kyrou is still an amazing player. A very mobile two-way playmaker who can play either wing or center is a valuable asset to have in your cupboard. His transition game is fantastic due to his strong skating ability and acceleration. While many think his creativity and his shot are his best assets, his creativity is also something that should be on that list since he can create something from nothing.

Top Goaltender: Corey Crawford (12 wins 2.27GAA .927 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Patrick Kane (4gp 0g 4a 4pts)

Chicago had themselves a .500 week as well going 2-2-0 in week eight. Missing Jonathan Toews and Corey Crawford doesn’t seem to be affecting the deep Blackhawks too much when Patrick Kane is scoring four points a week. Scott Darling is also put up some fantastic numbers despite a 1-2-0 record. Cause he did have a .940 save percentage as well as a 1.70 goals-against-average.

Going 2-2-0 on the week while missing two of your best players isn’t that bad, that just goes to show exactly how much depth the Blackhawks have. Besides Kane having a four point week, three other Hawks combined for nine points and a plus-two rating. Chicago should be able to gather four or even all six points in week nine. Cause they play the Stars and the Rangers twice. If Crawford and Toews return, the Hawks could very well go undefeated on the week.

Weekly Prospect Profile: RW Alex DeBrincat, Erie (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 26gp 28g 28a 56pts

Alex DeBrincat is already an all-star and he’s still in junior, possessing the highest points-per-game average of any player in the CHL right now. While being a smaller guy, he’s not shy to take on anyone in anyplace of the ice. He’s a very effective player around the net making him hard to contain despite being so small. Alex is able to mesh and build instant chemistry with anyone he plays with.

Columbus’ week eight couldn’t have gone much better, they had a perfect 3-0-0 record. Zach Werenski continues to baffle everybody every game. Sergei Bobrovsky had himself a solid week as well winning two of the three games. He also posted a .921 save percentage and a 1.50 goals-against-average.

John Tortorella has seemed to turn this Columbus team around and has made them serious contenders. While they may not win a cup this year, they will most likely make the playoffs and have a decent run. They have all the pieces the need. Week nine should be pretty easy for the surging Blue Jackets, as they make stops in Detroit, Edmonton, and New York against the Islanders. All games where they should manage to get all six points.

Weekly Prospect Profile: LW Sonny Milano, Cleveland (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 14gp 4g 4a 8pts

Sonny Milano is a very talented winger who just loves to have the puck on his stick. But why not? When he has it, things tend to happen. His speed and acceleration are fantastic as well, often giving him the jump on the opposition. And when pressured by opposing defense, he’s good on his edges making him able to turn on a dime at top speed often beating defenseman very easily.

Player of the Week: F Max Pacioretty (3gp 2g 1a 3pts)

The Habs received some tough news on Wednesday. It seems they’ll be without both Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais for the next six-to-eight weeks. While some are rushing to hit the panic button, I’m a little more optimistic. I see it as a golden opportunity for AHL prospects to cement themselves in the Habs lineup upon Galchenyuk/Desharnais’ return. They’re lacking depth scoring, right? Perhaps Michael McCarron, Charles Hudon, Nikita Scherbak, Sven Andrighetto, or Jacob de La Rose is the answer? Regardless, this could be a major turning point in Montreal’s season. If they can get a little help from their prospect pool, it will set them up beautifully for a long playoff run.

Montreal plays four straight home games over the next week. They play host to New Jersey on Thursday, Colorado on Saturday, Boston on Monday, and San Jose on Friday (Dec.16). The Canadiens should have a shot at grabbing all eight points with Carey Price between the pipes.

Weekly Prospect Profile: RW Nikita Scherbak, St. John’s (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 23gp 9g 8a 17pts

Selected 26th overall in 2014, Scherbak had a rough transition in his first year of pro tallying just seven goals, 16 assists (23 points) in 48 games with St. John’s in 2015-16. Despite the lousy production, Scherbak made strides in developing his defensive game to help make him a more complete player. In 2016-17, his offensive flair is starting to show with nine goals, eight assists (17 points) in 23 games so far. He’s not a guy known for digging in the corners or taking a big hit to make a play (tends to shy away from it), but his offensive skill-set screams top-six talent. If he can find a way to use his 6’2 190lbs frame a little more effectively, he could be an impact NHLer.

Top Defenseman: Kris Letang (21gp 2g 13a 15pts)
Top Rookie: Jake Guentzel (5gp 3g 1a 4pts)
Top Goaltender: Matt Murray (8 wins 2.01GAA .931 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Phil Kessel (3gp 3g 3a 6pts)

Marc-Andre Fleury continues to fall while Matt Murray continues to climb. Last week Murray went 1-0-0 while posting a .944 save percentage and a 1.83 goals-against-average. Phil Kessel, Evgeni Malkin, and Ian Cole all combined for 18 points and a combined +20. They too had a perfect record from week eight going 3-0-0 as well.

Marc-Andre Fleury continues to struggle so is a trade imminent? that’s a discussion for a later day. As of now, Matt Murray has been rolling every since his first ever NHL game. Week eight was absolutely solid for the Penguins as only one player on the team was a minus player (Eric Fehr, -1). Everyone else was on top of their game which is something they needed last week. Week nine should be even better for the Pens since they have games in Florida, Tampa Bay, Arizona and Boston. Pittsburgh in all likely-hood should be able to gather all eight points. However, Tampa Bay and Boston will give them a great challenge.

Weekly Prospect Profile: C/W Oskar Sundqvist, Wilkes-Barre (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 19gp 7g 9a 16pts

Winning a Stanley Cup in his rookie season, Oskar Sundqvist is a really talented prospect for the Penguins. A smart two-way player, he has amazing speed and is tough to knock off the puck despite his tall and lanky frame. He does need to gain more acceleration with his first step though. What also makes Oskar valuable is that he’s also a very solid player on the penalty kill.

Games of the Week (Dec.8-Dec.15)

Thursday, December 8th

New Jersey Devils at Montreal Canadiens

Without Galchenyuk and Desharnais, the Habs face their first real test to see what they’re made of. Will Carey Price carry them to victory? or, will scoring quickly become a concern for Montreal?

Friday, December 9th

New York Rangers at Chicago Blackhawks

More from Puck Prose

Some may have this match-up as their early Stanley Cup Finals prediction. Even though the Rangers have lost a little steam of late, this original six contest promises to be exciting.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Vancouver Canucks

Round two of this highly anticipated match-up kicks off at 7pm (et), that’s 4pm local time. You gotta wonder what upsets fans more, the presence of Nazem Kadri, or an early start to seemingly cater to the East Coast.

Saturday, December 10th

Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins

When these two teams get together, it usually makes for an exhilarating 60 minutes of hockey. These match-ups only promise to get better as the Leafs continue to progress in their rebuild plan.

Sunday, December 11th

Winnipeg Jets at Edmonton Oilers

How about another edition of Patrik Laine versus Connor McDavid? Edmonton beat the Jets 6-3 back on December 1st, so perhaps it’s time for a little revenge.

Monday, December 12th

Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens

This could be a tough game for the Habs without their star center. Not only does Montreal need to stop Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and David Pastrnak, but Carey Price also needs to outduel Tuukka Rask between the pipes.

Tuesday, December 13th

St. Louis Blues at Nashville Predators

These Central Division foes have already met twice. They split games with both home teams winning by a score of 3-1. Can the Blues grab two points on the road, or will the trend continue?
