The biggest losers of the week included the Detroit Red Wings at 0-3-0, Colorado Avalanche went 0-4-0, and Dallas Stars were 1-3-0.
We had a number of top performers over the last seven days. Stars F Jamie Benn led the league with seven points in four games, Caps F Nicklas Backstrom had six points in two games, Habs captain Max Pacioretty had six points in three games, and Rangers F Kevin Hayes also managed six points in three games. Nine players sat tied with five points on the week, including: ARZ F Christian Dvorak (4gp), Preds D Roman Josi (3gp), Caps F T.J. Oshie (2gp), Blackhawks F Patrick Kane (2gp), Bruins F David Krejci (3gp), Stars F Tyler Seguin (4gp), Sabres F Jack Eichel (4gp), Yotes F Max Domi (4gp), and Yotes D Oliver Ekman-Larsson (4gp).

Top Defenseman: Tyson Barrie (46gp 3g 20a 23pts)
Top Rookie: Mikko Rantanen (49gp 11g 15a 26pts)
Top Goaltender: Calvin Pickard (9 wins 3.02GAA .904 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Gabriel Landeskog (4gp 2g 1a 3pts)
Colorado has been struggling all season long and last week was proof of that since they had a record of 0-4-0. Not a single win, and with the trade deadline fast approaching and all the swirling rumors, expect a massive March 1st for the Avalanche. Gabriel Landeskog had himself a solid week which is great for his stock since he’s been the main focus of trade rumors. Calvin Pickard appeared in three games while Jeremy Smith played in the other.
So what will Colorado do come deadline day? Will they move Landeskog? Matt Duchene? Jarome Iginla? Only time will tell but it is safe to say that the team will be blown up and they will do what the Leafs are doing now and build through the draft and system.
Even though Smith played a game last week and gained a loss in the process he did have a very solid save percentage which was .925 but his goals-against-average was below average since it was 3.08. Pickard, on the other hand, took home the other three losses and in doing so put up a statistical output of .879 save percentage with a 3.73 goals-against-average. And while Landeskog had three points on the week, Fedor Tyutin, Mikko Rantanen, and Nathan MacKinnon each had two points combining for a total of six but in doing so had a combined minus-nine rating. And this week won’t get much easier for Colorado since they play Buffalo, Carolina, Tampa Bay, and Los Angeles.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Gustav Olhaver, Rogle BK J20 (SuperElit)
2016-17 stats: 31gp 10g 19a 29pts
A lot of people look at Gustav Olhaver as a goon type player, someone who just wants to go out there and hit as well as fight. But that’s not fully the case he’s also a tremendous goal scorer which he has shown in Sweden’s junior leagues. If he can transfer his goalscoring touch and willingness to have his name on the scoresheet every game into the professional style of play, he’s going to be a serious player in the future.

Top Defenseman: Mike Green (49gp 10g 16a 26pts)
Top Rookie: Anthony Mantha (42gp 13g 16a 29pts)
Top Goaltender: Petr Mrazek (12 wins 3.04GAA .901 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Anthony Mantha (4gp 1g 2a 3pts)
Like Colorado, Detroit was another team to post a record of 0-4-0 in the week. And since they currently sit bottom of the Eastern Conference, it’s safe to assume to 20+ year playoff streak is going to end, which is quite unfortunate. But the team has struggled all season with goaltending often swapping between Jimmy Howard, Petr Mrazek, and Jared Coreau.
And while on the topic of goaltending, Petr Mrazek appeared in three games last week and despite the 0-3-0 record, his numbers were actually pretty solid, he posted a .918 save percentage and a 2.74 goals-against-average. Coreau, on the other hand, wasn’t so great as he put up a .800 save percentage along with a 6.00 goals-against-average in his only game played.
Veteran forward Henrik Zetterberg was tied with three other Red Wings with three points on the week, however, he finished with a minus-one rating while Andreas Athanasiou finished as a minus four and Thomas Vanek finished as a minus three, the bright spot was rookie Anthony Mantha who managed to hold onto a plus-two rating. So what should the Red Wings do come deadline time? Their best option is to sell, but for a fair price cause, they still have some key players who can still contribute. Let’s just hope they can improve this week, however, it won’t be easy as they play Washington, Pittsburgh, and then the Islanders.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Adam Marsh, Charlottetown (QMJHL)
2016-17 stats: 17gp 7g 7a 14pts
Adam Marsh has great speed and is a pure goal scorer who has a great eye for the back of the net. One thing he does need to work on while his time in the QMJHL and eventually the AHL is his defensive game since he often puts himself out of position. Another thing he can do is add some strength to his frame. But he still has time to get these things fine tuned before joining the NHL or even the AHL.

Top Goaltender: Cam Ward (21-17-6 2.62GAA .905 save percentage)
Player of the Week: C Elias Lindholm (1gp 0g 2a 2pts)
The Carolina Hurricanes are currently in the midst of their bye week, so their only game this week was a tough loss against the struggling Dallas Stars. The Canes lost 5-2 and now find themselves likely on the outside of the playoff picture by season’s end.
Carolina is currently eight points out of a playoff spot, and will need an epic streak down the stretch to climb back into the picture. Don’t hold thy breath. This season is a disappointment for a team with a really good coach that just can’t seem to put it all together. The clock may be ticking on Ron Francis and Bill Peters. They have the Avalanche next, so they have a shot to gain some confidence.
Elias Lindholm and Jordan Staal put up two assists a piece on goals from Justin Faulk and Sebastien Aho in their only game, and will need these players to produce down the line.
Weekly Prospect Profile: D Trevor Carrick, Charlotte (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 29gp 2g 8a 10pts
Trevor Carrick is still a really solid prospect, but he may be a very unknown one. Carrick has quietly put together outstanding offensive seasons in the AHL, scoring 32 and 42 points in the previous two seasons. While he’s dealt with injuries and inconsistent play this year, he has still managed to produce 10 points in only 29 games. While his offense may get headlines, reports are that Carrick is responsible in his own end as well. He may be exposed to the Vegas Golden Knights during the expansion, and they would be smart to take interest in the player.

Top Goaltender: Ryan Miller (15-16-3 2.65GAA .916 save percentage)
Player of the Week: C Bo Horvat (3gp 2g 2a 4pts)
The Vancouver Canucks continue to find themselves within reach of a playoff spot. The Canucks shut down the high-flying Columbus Blue Jackets with a 3-0 victory, before losing 4-3 to the Bruins. They got back in the win column with an intense and thrilling 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres, and came back down to earth losing 4-0 to Pittsburgh.
Bo Horvat has officially taken over as the team’s biggest offensive threat, finally receiving the crown from Daniel and Henrik Sedin. Horvat now leads the Canucks with 38 points, ahead of Henrik’s 34 and Daniel’s 31. Possible trade deadline acquisition Alexandre Burrows had one of his most productive weeks also scoring two goals and two assists in the four games this week. The Canucks are expected to be listening to offers for the third longest-tenured Canucks.
The Canucks are five points back of the Calgary Flames for the final playoff spot, so their chances are relatively slim, but with two very important games against the St.Louis Blues and Calgary Flames themselves, the Canucks will be able to decide their own fate.
Weekly Prospect Profile: D Tate Olson, Prince George (WHL)
2016-17 stats: 54gp 7g 16a 23pts
The second last pick (210th) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft may beat the odds and at least get an entry level contract. Tate Olson had a strong post-draft season scoring 47 points in 65 games. He has taken a step back this year offensively. Olson is a smart, safe defender who never takes any risks during the game. While he’s still a long shot to become an NHL player, he has put himself on notice.

Top Goaltender: Kari Lehtonen (12 wins 2.88GAA .902 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Jamie Benn (4gp 3g 4a 7pts)
Dallas had themselves a horrible week, they played four games but only managed to win one. The week started off with a 3-2 loss to the Senators, then they rebounded with a 5-2 win over the Hurricanes, but the rest of the week was all downhill. They lost 5-3 to Nashville than 5-2 to Winnipeg. But despite their defensive and goaltending deficiencies, their scoring was amazing. Jamie Benn leads the week for the forwards while Esa Lindell leads the defense with only two points.
Dallas’ weekly issues were obviously in net, Kari Lehtonen played in three of the games putting up a 1-2-0 record with a .906 save percentage and a 2.72 goals-against-average, which isn’t that bad. Antti Niemi, however, was much worse, he took the other loss while posting a 3.03 goals-against-average with a .864 save percentage.
The brightest spot though was forward Jamie Benn who had an excellent seven points in four games. Tyler Seguin was great as well with five in four but finished as a minus three. Dallas is currently on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs so could they be sellers at the deadline? It’s quite possible. This week the netminding will have to get better since the week won’t be easy as they have games against Minnesota and Tampa Bay.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Fredrik Karlstrom, AIK (Allsvenskan)
2016-17 stats: 37gp 7g 13a 20pts
Due to his large frame and great skating ability, Fredrik Karlstrom is often looked at as the prototypical power forward. But he plays more physically than offensively, and something he needs to work on badly in order to be an effective pro is his ability to score against more elite competition, cause so far against the bigger and stronger players usually has Karlstrom overwhelmed. But he will get there eventually, especially with a few seasons in the AHL in the coming years.

Top Rookie: Artturi Lehkonen (49gp 11g 5a 16pts)
Top Goaltender: Carey Price (24 wins 2.46GAA .917 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Max Pacioretty (3gp 3g 3a 6pts)
After a rather rough week for the Canadiens, the organization decided to make an internal change by letting go of coach Michel Therrien and hired ex-Bruins coach Claude Julien. There was one bright spot on the week and that was how well Max Pacioretty had done in the teams three games. However, that was about all since Montreal finished the week with a 1-2-0 record.
Max Pacioretty put up a whopping six points in three games while everyone else on the team only had two points or less. Carey Price appeared in two games last week for the club and in doing so gathered a win and a loss as well as a .869 save percentage and a 3.93 goals-against-average. Al Montoya appeared in the other game and didn’t fair out much better, he took home the other loss and a .857 save percentage with a 3.05 goals-against-average.
With the trade deadline fast approaching things are up in the air in regards to what Montreal may do. But since they still sit first in the Atlantic division expect them to be buyers. This week the Canadiens have a couple tough games ahead of them but if they play properly they could manage all four points. They play Winnipeg and then finish the week against the Rangers.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Jeremiah Addison, Windsor (OHL)
2016-17 stats: 37gp 21g 15a 36pts
Jeremiah Addison is an all-around forward who can generate great offense while still playing sound defensively and physically. He has a great nose for the net and loves to crash it which in turn creates more opportunities for himself and his teammates.

Top Rookie: Mitch Marner (56gp 15g 33a 48pts)
Top Goaltender: Frederik Andersen (23 wins 2.75GAA .915 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Nazem Kadri (4gp 3g 2a 5pts)
Who would have though at the beginning of the season that the Leafs rookies would be taking over the team? Mitch Marner leads all Leafs players in scoring and sits atop the list for rookie scoring in the NHL. And the first year NHLer Nikita Zaitsev leads the Leafs defense in points. If you’re a Toronto fan, the future looks very bright and it’s only going to get better.
They did, however, open the week on a losing note with a 2-1 overtime loss against St. Louis, and then lost yet again against Buffalo by a score of 3-1. After that, though the Leafs stormed back and absolutely annihilated the Islanders by a score of 7-1, but they fell once again to the Blue Jackets 5-2 finishing the week with a 1-2-1 record. Forwards Nazem Kadri and Josh Leivo both had five points apiece in the four games but Kadri finished as a plus one but also had three goals to where as Leivo had one goal but finished as a plus three. Another one of the Leafs rookies wasn’t far behind as William Nylander had himself a three point week.
Netminder Frederik Andersen appeared in three games putting up a .500 record of 1-1-1 and a very respectable .938 save percentage with a 2.04 goals-against-average. Curtis McElhinney, on the other hand, appeared in the final game earning a loss as well a below average .882 save percentage and a 4.05 goals-against-average. Toronto currently sits on the final wild card spot so there have been a significant amount of rumours on which forward will be moved in order to get a defenseman, while no one knows if the Leafs will stick to their rebuild schedule or get antsy and want to fix it right away with a deal is yet to be seen so deadline day will be filled with anticipation if you’re a fan of the Leafs. But as for this week, Toronto has a chance to climb up since they have games against Ottawa, Carolina, and Winnipeg.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Dmytro Timashov, Toronto (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 42gp 8g 7a 15pts
While in the QMJHL, Dmytro Timashov was amazing putting up 90 points in 66 games during his first season. His puckhandling skills are top notch as well as his explosiveness and speed. With those attributes, he can easily open up space for him teammates. If he can transfer all of this into the pro game, the Maple Leafs have yet another top notch player who they can build around.

Top Goaltender: Connor Hellebuyck (18 wins 2.77GAA .910 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Patrik Laine (3gp 3g 1a 4pts)
Yet another Central division team struggled last week and that’s the Jets, they finished the week with a 1-2-0 record. Connor Hellebuyck played in all three games, and despite the team’s record, he was still pretty solid. And rookie sensation Patrik Laine carried the team offensively as well as Mark Scheifele.
The Jets started the week off with a 5-2 loss to Chicago than a 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay, however, Winnipeg was able to redeem themselves a 5-2 win over Dallas. Laine was awesome putting up four points in three games where three of which were goals. And now he’s only one point behind Toronto forward Mitch Marner. Speaking of goal scorers, the Jets first ever pick Mark Scheifele leads the team in scoring and last week put up a solid three points in three games.
Also, since Hellebuyck appeared in all three games, he still had some great numbers despite his record, he posted a .919 save percentage along with a 2.71 goals-against-average. And now that the Jets sit outside of the playoffs, they have the prospects to make a significant deal to help boost the team so they may be very active on the deadline. This week, however, the Jets will need to get some much-needed points but it may not be easy as they have games against Pittsburgh, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Scott Kosmachuk, Manitoba (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 33gp 8g 9a 17pts
A hard worker in the offensive zone, Scott Kosmachuk plays the game with high energy and a lot of tenacity. He’s willing to go to the dirty areas of the ice to help make his team succeed. Since he’s strong on his skates, this often makes him very difficult to knock off the puck which he uses to his advantage in order to crash the net at a higher top speed than normal. However, due to his over-aggressive style of play Scott can often be caught out of position which is never a good thing since it leaves the opposition wide open to make better scoring opportunities.

Top Goaltender: Robin Lehner (15 wins 2.55GAA .924 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Jack Eichel (4gp 1g 4a 5pts)
Buffalo had a .500 week with a record of 2-2-0. They gathered wins against Ottawa and Toronto but lost to Vancouver and Anaheim. Robin Lehner appeared in all for games for the Sabres last week and was pretty solid. The Sabres offense was pretty decent as well with Jack Eichel leading the way.
Eichel has been great since returning from his serious ankle injury and last week he continued his solid play with five points in four games. Kyle Okposo and Sam Reinhart both had four points on the week and combined for an even rating, unfortunately.
With Lehner appearing in all four games last week you would be surprised to know he had some solid stats regardless of the team’s overall record. He had a .931 save percentage and a 2.78 goals-against-average despite earning two losses in the process. The Sabres start off the week with a fairly easy game against Colorado but they rest of the week gets significantly tougher when they play St. Louis, and Chicago.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Daniel Catenacci, Rochester (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 45gp 5g 6a 11pts
Daniel Catenacci was once considered the fastest skater in the 2011 draft but has yet to really showcase his speed in the pro game since he hasn’t been able to hold down a roster spot. He does fine in the AHL though and with his speed and acceleration, he creates a lot of open ice chances to help his team. Another thing Daniel will do is finish his checks meaning he also plays a physical game despite his size.

Top Goaltender: John Gibson (22-14-8 2.30GAA .921 save percentage)
Player of the Week: RW Corey Perry (3gp 2g 2a 4pts)
The Ducks kept themselves in the second seed in the Pacific Division with a 2-1-0 record, which included wins against the Buffalo Sabres and powerhouse Minnesota Wild. Their only loss came against the league-leading Washington Capitals.
The Ducks made headlines on the back of Antoine Vermette’s brutal slash on a linesman in their shutout of the Minnesota Wild. Vermette will be suspended for at least 10 games. The Ducks will miss Vermette due to his solid face-off ability where he leads the league with an outstanding 62.4% success rate.
Corey Perry led the way offensively scoring two goals and adding two assists. Perry is having a down year by his standards and the former 50-goal scorer only has 11 on the year so far. Hampus Lindholm also had a four-point week from the back end bringing his points total to 13 on the club. John Gibson was a brick wall against the high-flying Minnesota Wild, outperforming Devan Dubnyk. The Ducks have to keep winning to fend off the Edmonton Oilers who are two points back, with a game in hand.
Weekly Prospect Profile: D Jacob Larsson, Frolunda (SHL)
2016-17 stats: 20gp 0g 3a 3pts
The Ducks have the best defensive prospects in the entire NHL with the likes of Shea Theodore, Brandon Montour and of course 2015 1st rounder Jacob Larsson. Larsson stunned many when he got into four games of NHL action near the start of the season. He was eventually assigned to the minor league San Diego Gulls where he struggled and eventually returned to Sweden. Back home, the smart two-way defender has struggled to improve on his post-draft season when he scored five goals and 14 points in 47 games. The Ducks will develop him correctly, and they can only hope this stretch is just a small bump in the road.

Player of the Week: F Brandon Dubinsky (4gp 1g 3a 4pts)
The Columbus Blue Jackets have come back to life a little bit ever since their historic 16-game win streak. The Jackets have played around .500 hockey and that was the case this week as the Jackets went 2-2-0. While the Jackets lost a tough one against division rivals New York Rangers, the week also saw them sweep the season series against the Red Wings for the first time.
Brandon Dubinsky led the way offensively scoring at a point per game pace this week. Boone Jenner also had a solid week, scoring two goals and bringing his total up to 11. It’s been an off year for Jenner, the former 30-goal scorer, but if he gets his offensive game rolling, it will go a long way for the Jackets.
Columbus goalie Joonas Korpisalo had his best game since his recall against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he now has his fourth win of the season. If Korpisalo can maintain that level of performance, the Blue Jackets won’t have to go shopping for a backup goaltender.
Weekly Prospect Profile: C TJ Tynan, Cleveland (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 47gp 5g 21a 26pts
Tynan is a classic case of small hockey player scores well in the minors. The 5’9 165-pound center is now in his third full season of professional hockey, and he has been a mountain of consistency. Tynan has incredible speed, which may help him have a chance in the NHL. His hockey IQ is off the charts as well and he is just waiting for his chance. Martin St.Louis did it, so anything is possible. Fun fact: Tynan was selected with the draft pick Columbus acquired for former first rounder Nikita Filatov.

Player of the Week: F Brayden Point (2gp 2g 1a 3pts)
The Lightning only played two games last week and they put up a winning record of 1-0-1. Both Ben Bishop and Andrei Vasilevskiy appeared in a single game last week putting up some very solid numbers. And rookie forward Brayden Point leads the team in scoring through those two games.
Point was great last week with three points in two games he also had a very solid plus three rating. Victor Hedman and Ondrej Palat both had two point weeks and combined for a rating of plus-four. So offense and defense were definitely doing great, they just couldn’t squeeze out the shootout win against the Wild.
Bishop gained the regulation win, as well as a top notch .970, save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against-average, which could very well boost his stock since the deadline is around the corner. Vasilevskiy though was much better despite the shootout loss, he had a .974 save percentage and a 0.92 goals-against-average. Can the Lightning put up another solid week this week? They very well could but it may be tough since they play Dallas, Colorado, and Edmonton. The Colorado game should be an easy win, though.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Otto Somppi, Halifax (QMJHL)
2016-17 stats: 48gp 14g 23a 37pts
Otto Somppi plays a quite physical game, and while he puts up very respectable seasons in the QMJHL, his offensive potential is quite limited when looking at the pro game. He can play a 200-foot game since he works hard every shift with his backcheck being one of his strongest attributes next to his faceoff skills.

The Senators had a pretty solid week last week with a win over the Stars and a shutout against the Islanders, however, they did lose their game against Buffalo leaving the team with a 2-1-0 record which is still good granted they hold the second spot in the Atlantic. Both Dion Phaneuf and Craig Anderson were solid as well as backup/second starter Mike Condon.
Anderson returned to play last week and in doing so played in two games, he did though lose one and win one as well but what really stood out for him was his save percentage of .948 and his goals-against-average of 1.51. Condon was awesome too gathering himself the other win a 2.02 goals-against-average on the week as well as a .939 save percentage.
Phaneuf leads the team in scoring with three points in three games and a plus-one rating. After him, Mark Stone, Bobby Ryan, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, and Erik Karlsson all had two-point weeks. This week the Sens play the Devils, Maple Leafs, Jets, and then finish the week off against New Jersey again. So Ottawa has a solid chance at gaining more points however it’s not going to be easy.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Colin White, Boston College (NCAA)
2016-17 stats: 27gp 14g 12a 26pts
Colin White is a very talented scorer, which he also showed at this year’s World Junior Under 20 tournament. He plays the game at a very high level and in doing so puts everything he can into every single shift. The Flames started their week off with a dreadful performance, being shut down 5-0 by the Arizona Coyotes. It was the Flames first game after their bye week. The Flames recovered with a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, and that win put them back in a playoff position.
Rookie Matthew Tkachuk continues to put up points, scoring two more this week to bring his total up to 36 points, good enough for second on the team and ahead of Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. Johnny Gaudreau was promptly demoted to the fourth line during the Flames’ loss against the Coyotes.
The Flames also signed defenseman Matt Bartkowski to a Professional Tryout, as it seems they are looking to shore up their defensive depth. The Flames may be in a playoff position, but the Los Angeles Kings are nipping at their heels with one point to make up and three games in hand.
Weekly Prospect Profile: D Brandon Hickey, Boston U. (HE)
2016-17 stats: 30gp 4g 10a 14pts
The 2014 3rd rounder is playing his third season at Boston University and Hockey looks to be back on track this year, with 14 points in 30 games so far, after falling from 17 to eight points in between his first two years. Wes Gilbertson of The Calgary Sun asked Hickey’s former teammate Jack Eichel for a scouting report and Eichel answered “He’s a really good player – he’s a real smart defenceman…He’s got a great one-timer.” Hickey will likely finish out his college career next season before turning pro.

The Devils came off their bye week with a 4-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks, but they straightened out their fatigue with a 3-2 win over the lowly Colorado Avalanche to draw an even 1-1-0 record this week. The Devils still find themselves in the thick of the playoff race, sitting five points back of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the final wild-card spot in the East, but the Panthers, Islanders, and Flyers are between them.
Taylor Hall continues to lead the way offensively, adding two assists this week to his team-leading 37 points on the year. Hall missed 10 games so far this season, but he still has a three-point cushion over Kyle Palmieri. Jacob Josefson also added two assists this week.
The Devils will determine their playoff fates this week, as they have a pair of games against both the Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders this week. If they can take both games from the Islanders, they have a shot at a playoff position.
Weekly Prospect Profile: C Brandon Baddock, Adirondack (ECHL)
2016-17 stats: 17gp 0g 3a 3pts
Brandon Baddock was a hard-working leader during his WHL days with the Edmonton Oil Kings, and the Devils made him their 6th round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Baddock’s pro career has stalled drastically, where he is struggling to put up points in the ECHL. Role players that make it to the NHL need to show a lot more offense than Baddock has to this point, but he’s still got two more years to prove himself.

Player of the Week: RW Wayne Simmonds (3gp 2g 0a 2pts)
The Flyers went 1-2-0 this past week and that saw them fall out of a playoff spot. The Flyers lost a close one to the New York Islanders and Calgary Flames over the week, but they kept themselves in it with an overtime win over the San Jose Sharks. The Flyers are currently two points back of the Toronto Maple Leafs, but the Leafs have one game in hand.
Wayne Simmonds continues to put pucks in the net, scoring two goals this week including the game-winning overtime goal against the San Jose Sharks. Simmonds goal total sits at 23, and he’s well on his way to post 30 for the second consecutive year. The goaltending carousel continues as the Flyers try to find out if they can make a run to the playoffs with one of Steve Mason or Michal Neuvirth in net.
The Flyers have a tough matchup against the Edmonton Oilers before taking on the Vancouver Canucks. They will end the week with a battle against the league-leading Washington Capitals.
Weekly Prospect Profile: D Robert Hagg, Leigh Valley (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 43gp 5g 7a 12pts
The Flyers have an abundance of young defensemen that will be playing a big role with the club sooner rather than later. Robert Hagg is next in line. Hagg is in his third full professional season with Leigh Valley and the 22-year-old Swede has made a huge step forward, especially in his defensive game. On Bob McKenzie’s latest podcast he stated that he believed Hagg is all but penciled into an NHL job on the Flyers blueline next season. Hagg isn’t flashy, but he brings a solid two-way game from the blue line.

Player of the Week: D Roman Josi (3gp 4g 1a 5pts)
Roman Josi has been on absolute fire since returning from injury, and last week is further proof of that. Both Pekka Rinne and Juuse Saros has horrendous weeks though since the Predators only mustered up a record of 1-2-0. Viktor Arvidsson and P.K. Subban both had great weeks as well.
But back to goaltending, Rinne definitely struggled he may have started in two games but unfortunately let in a solid amount of goals and was later pulled and replaced by Saros. But in the other game he appeared in he did gain himself a win but due to the previous one, he posted a .811 save percentage and a 4.78 goals-against-average. Saros, on the other hand, gained two losses on the week (one from when he took over when Rinne got pulled) and the other from the game he started in, and due to this he also had terrible numbers which consisted of a .880 save percentage and a 4.19 goals-against-average.
Josi was great though with five points in three games four of which were goals which are great for a defenseman to put up. Arvidsson and Subban both had four-point weeks but unfortunately finished with a combined even rating. So can the Predators continue their scoring ways this week? They could but they will have to step up defensively and in the net in order to put up a winning week since they have games against Minnesota, Columbus, and Calgary.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Adam Payerl, Milwaukee (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 49gp 10g 15a 25pts
Known for his physical play and big hits, Adam Payerl also possesses a long reach in which he’ll use often to protect the puck along the boards and from opposing defenseman. When Adam is at his best is when he’s applying pressure in a more defensive role with his team.

Player of the Week: D Oscar Klefbom (2gp 1g 2a 3pts)
The Oilers stumbled out of their bye week to a 5-1 loss against the Chicago Blackhawks. The loss was highlighted by the Oilers’ lack of scoring over the previous four games. They got some of their offensive spark back against the Arizona Coyotes in a 5-2 win.
Leon Draisaitl and Oscar Klefbom each had three-point nights against the Coyotes and seemed to dictate the play every time they were on the ice. Klefbom now has nine goals this season, putting him in the team lead from the blue line. Connor McDavid was his usual self, adding three helpers to put him back in the lead for the NHL’s scoring title.
It’s not all roses though, as Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are still struggling to produce offense, and those players will need to step up their game to ensure the Oilers make the playoffs. GM Peter Chiarelli doesn’t seem to be willing to add a bigger piece to the club for a stretch run, so they’ll have to do it from within.
Weekly Prospect Profile: D Ziyat Paigin, Kazan (KHL)
2016-17 stats: 17gp 1g 3a 4pts
The Oilers have quite the enigmatic player here in 7th rounder Ziyat Paigin. The 6’6 209 pound Russian defender was an unknown who blew expectations out of the water when he was dealt to Sochi in his post-draft year. Paigin put up 27 points in 37 games with Sochi and looked to be an absolute steal. This season, Paigin returned to Kazan where he has since been demoted to the MHL. He’s a 22-year-old prospect, so it’s anybody’s guess what he’ll become now.

Player of the Week: F Joe Thornton (4gp 2g 3a 5pts)
The San Jose Sharks may lead the Pacific Division, but they struggled immensely this past week. The saving grace for the Sharks is the loser point, as they did manage to drag two of their losses into overtime. After being shelled 6-3 by the Boston Bruins, the Sharks lost in overtime to Philly, defeated the New Jersey Devils, and were outscored against the Florida Panthers in a 6-5 defeat. Their record for the week was 1-1-2.
Joe Thornton finally scored a goal against an actual NHL goaltender this week, as his previous three goals were all empty netters. The bearded wonder must’ve been inspired because he scored a second goal against an NHL goaltender during the week. The offense was in full force as captain Joe Pavelski also had a five-point week, while Brent Burns, Kevin Labanc, and Tomas Hertl all produced four points in the four games.
The Sharks still have a four-point cushion on second-place Anaheim Ducks in the Division lead, but they will need to have a much better week than they just had. They face off against the Arizona Coyotes and Boston Bruins before entering their bye week.
Weekly Prospect Profile: D Mirco Mueller, San Jose (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 39gp 1g 12a 13pts
Mueller made the Sharks team out of camp in 2014-15, playing 39 games before injuries and demotions stalled his development. Two years later and Mueller is still trying to find his way. The Swiss native is only 21 and will likely benefit from the time in the minors. Mueller is a strong comparable to current Sharks’ defender Justin Braun.

Florida had a quite surprising week granted they have been struggling so speaking of which they managed to pull out a 2-1-0 record against some tough opponents. The week, however, did start off with a 6-3 loss to the Kings but had a massive 7-4 win over Nashville than a 6-5 overtime win over San Jose. Jonathan Huberdeau has been on absolute fire since returning from injury and leads the team for forwards over the past week in points. Roberto Luongo and James Reimer both appeared in games last week.
Even though the Panthers put up a winning record, they did, however, let in too many goals, this is why even though Luongo had a 1-1-0 record he also had a .842 save percentage and a 5.46 goals-against-average. Reimer, on the other hand, had a win as well while posting a .813 save percentage and a 3.63 goals-against-average.
Huberdeau though was great putting up six points in three games he also finished with a plus-two rating. Aleksander Barkov, Jussi Jokinen, and Vincent Trocheck all had five point weeks and combined for an even rating. Since the Panthers sit outside the playoffs they may just be sellers at the deadline but only time will tell. This week though the Panthers have their work cut out for them as they play Anaheim, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Edmonton.

The Los Angeles Kings are another team in the midst of their bye week which ends Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes. In their only game this week, the Kings found their offense against the Florida Panthers, scoring six goals in a 6-3 victory. They had been shut out by the Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals in their previous two games.
Jeff Carter has been the beating heart of the team’s offense, and his four-point night against the Panthers solidified his spot as the team’s offensive leader. Carter’s 29 goals this season is the most he has put up since joining the Kings in the middle of the 2011-12 NHL season.
The Kings are currently holding down a playoff spot with games in hand and they will likely be heading to the playoffs once again, but they are no longer a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. They will need to keep the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks at a distance, but with three of their next four games coming against non-playoff teams Arizona, Florida, and Colorado, it shouldn’t be too difficult.
Weekly Prospect Profile: D Paul Ladue, Ontario (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 37gp 6g 12a 18pts
Paul Ladue was virtually unheard of around the NHL, but the Kings’ 2012 6th rounder is having an incredible start to his professional hockey career. Ladue played three years at the University of North Dakota, and was part of the championship team last season that included the likes of Drake Caggiula, Brock Boeser, Troy Stecher and Nick Schmaltz. The 24-year-old turned enough heads with the Reign to earn a call-up to the big club. Ladue is a solid puck-moving defender that has a chance to play with the Kings down the stretch and maybe even in the playoffs.

The Bruins had themselves a perfect week 18 going 3-0-0 with wins over San Jose (6-3), Vancouver (4-3), and Montreal (4-0). So it’s safe to say Tuukka Rask was on top of his game as well as David Krejci and the rest of the Bruins offense.
Rask played in two games meaning he had himself two wins, but he also had himself a very solid .941 save percentage and a 1.50 goals-against-average. Anton Khudobin played in the other game meaning he got a win as well with a .906 save percentage and a 3.01 goals-against-average.
The offense is what really stood out for Boston though, Krejci leads the way with five points in three games. Behind him, David Pastrnak, Frank Vatrano, Patrice Bergeron, and David Backes all had four point weeks and combined for a plus-six rating. The Bruins have a tough week 19 ahead of them since they play San Jose and Anaheim. However, you can expect the Sharks to want some sort of revenge over last week’s game and Anaheim has become more solid all the way around.

He has spent the last few years with the Boston organization but this season has opted to play in Russia instead where he’s still had an alright season. While being a solid playmaker, Alex can also finish due to his soft hands.

Player of the Week: C Martin Hanzal (3gp 4g 0a 4pts)
The Coyotes had their best week of the season, and they can thank their offense for that. The Coyotes had a four-game win streak snapped against the Edmonton Oilers, but they scored at least four goals in their victories over the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Calgary Flames.
Martin Hanzal had a strong week scoring four goals in the three games he played in, and that will keep his stock high as NHL teams make their offers for the pending unrestricted free agent. Rookie Christian Dvorak had a solid week as well scoring four goals himself and adding a helper.
The return of Max Domi to the lineup seems to be the biggest factor in the Coyotes’ recent stream of success. Domi also scored five points this week. Domi now has 21 points in 32 games, and is showing he has no issues with the dreaded sophomore slump. While the season is lost, the Coyotes’ recent surge is a good step for their future.
Weekly Prospect Profile: RW Christian Fischer, Tucson (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 38gp 18g 18a 36pts
Wherever Fischer goes, he just keeps scoring. Christian Fischer was drafted out of the US National Under-18 Team in the USHL and spent his post-draft season tearing up the scoresheet for the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL. Fischer turned pro as a 19-year-old, and has completely torn up the AHL scoresheet as well. The big-bodied forward is a strong player along the boards and down low, but he lacks the foot speed to be effective on the rush.

Player of the Week: LW Jason Chimera (4gp 3g 0a 3pts)
The Islanders finished this past week with an even 2-2-0 record, keeping their heads above water in the playoff race, but the week was soured with a disastrous 7-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team they are chasing. The loss against the Leafs will be a turning point, but it’s up to the club to decide which way their turn.
Jason Chimera led the way offensively, scoring three goals including a controversial penalty shot goal in the club’s only goal in the loss to the Leafs. Chimera has quietly put up a solid 14-goal season as a 37-year-old. Anders Lee also scored three goals this week, bringing his total to 21 goals on the year, which leads the team.
The best news for the Islanders happened off the ice, as it was reported that John Tavares is ready to start discussing potential contract extension options. It sounds like Tavares wants to stay with the Islanders, and considering he is the face of the franchise, that’s an extremely good thing for the club.
Weekly Prospect Profile: G Ilya Sorokin, CSKA (KHL)
2016-17 stats: 23 wins, 1.61 GAA .928 Save Percentage
Goalies are voodoo, especially Russian goaltenders, but the Islanders may have an absolute stud on their hands. Sorokin has outstanding numbers in the KHL as 21-year-old, but it should be noted that most KHL goalies have inflated numbers. Either way, Sorokin is on track to become a starting goaltender in the NHL, if he ever crosses the pond. Expect the Islanders to try and get Sorokin on North American ice as soon as next season.

Top Goaltender: Matt Murray (21-6-2 2.27GAA .926 save percentage)
Player of the Week: RW Phil Kessel (3gp 3g 1a 4pts)
The Penguins put together dominant wins over the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks with an overtime loss against the Coyotes sandwiched in between. The Pens finished the week with a 2-0-1 record, keeping their position at second in the Metropolitan Division.
Phil Kessel stole the offensive headlines, while teammate Sidney Crosby teased by scoring his 999th point against the Vancouver Canucks, unable to hit the one thousand mark. All eyes will be on Sidney Crosby as the Penguins get ready for a back to back against the Winnipeg Jets and Columbus Blue Jackets. Surely Sid is set to nab point 1,000 in one of those games.
Matt Murray has completely taken the starter’s job in between the pipes now and it is no contest. Murray finished the week with a .982 save percentage while his backup Marc-Andre Fleury struggled in his only outing against the Coyotes, allowing four goals on 21 shots.
Weekly Prospect Profile: RW Sam Lafferty, Brown U. (ECAC)
2016-17 stats: 25gp 10g 20a 30pts
Sam Lafferty’s selection in the fourth round of the 2013 draft was met with a lot of fanfare. Lafferty is a Pennsylvania native, and until this season an NHL career looked bleak. Lafferty has already tripled his points total from last season, and that has the Penguins paying attention. While his skill set isn’t completely noticeable, word is Lafferty does everything well, but nothing too great.

Top Goaltender: Jake Allen (21 wins 2.67GAA .904 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Patrik Berglund (3gp 4g 0a 4pts)
Another team to put up a perfect record was the Blues who went 3-0-0, the week started off with a 2-1 overtime win over Toronto then 4-2 win over the Canadiens and finally a 2-0 win over the struggling Red Wings. Patrik Berglund and Jaden Schwartz were sitting atop the scoresheet by the end of the week. Also, Jake Allen and backup Carter Hutton were very strong.
Allen played in two games last week and in doing so had a .952 save percentage and a 1.50 goals-against-average. Hutton, on the other hand, was absolutely perfect since he posted a shutout.
Berglund had four points in three games, and all four were goals he also finished with a plus-four rating. Schwartz also had a four-point week but finished as a plus five. After those two four Blues, all had two-point weeks, David Perron, Alex Pietrangelo, Kevin Shattenkirk, and Jori Lehtera who all combined as a plus four. And since St. Louis holds third in the Central division they may not be sellers at the deadline but may add a depth player or two. So how are the Blues chances this week? They have a solid chance to climb the standings as they play Vancouver, Buffalo, and Florida this week.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Tanner Kaspick, Brandon (WHL)
2016-17 stats: 46gp 17g 26a 43pts
Tanner Kaspick is an elite shooter who does not hesitate to finish his plays when he gets the chance. He’s incredibly strong on his skates which will allow him to capitalize on any opening that may arise cause he’s also very quick as well. And while he does work hard on the forecheck, he does need to improve his play when getting back to his own end.

Top Goaltender: Corey Crawford (22 wins 2.57GAA .918 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Patrick Kane (2gp 2g 3a 5pts)
Despite a very short week for the Blackhawks they still had a perfect week of 2-0-0. Both Corey Crawford and Scott Darling each played a game and put up tremendous numbers. And talking about tremendous numbers, Patrick Kane was marvelous.
Kane led the league last year in scoring, and while he may not do so again this season, he will be right up there and last week he put up an outstanding five points in two games. Artem Anisimov, Richard Panik, and Artemi Panarin were all behind Kane with three point weeks combining for a plus-six rating.
Now back to Crawford and Darling, they both earned a win and in doing so were fantastic, Crawford had a .933 save percentage, Darling’s was .968. Corey had a 2.01 goals-against-average while Darling had a 1.00 goals-against-average. Chicago has seemed to pick up play as of late and in doing so now hold the second spot in the Central division, and they have a chance to climb even higher this week since they play Edmonton, Buffalo, and Minnesota.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Nathan Noel, Saint John (QMJHL)
2016-17 stats: 39gp 16g 16a 32pts
Nathan Noel is a hard working forward who has great offensive instincts that compliments the rest of his team. He has great hockey sense and creativity which allows him to do things for his teammates in the offensive zone that most cannot. With solid puck handling skills and great hands and awesome skating, Noel will put himself in a position to help his team score or do it himself.

Top Goaltender: Devan Dubnyk (31 wins 1.97GAA .933 save percentage)
Player of the Week: F Jason Pominville (3gp 0g 3a 3pts)
Minnesota had themselves a winning week again which isn’t too surprising given their high-octane offense and ridiculously amazing goaltending. They finished the week with a 2-1-0 record, they started the week of with a 2-1 shootout victory over Tampa than a 6-3 win over Detroit, however, they couldn’t manage to put in a goal against Anaheim where they lost that game 1-0. Devan Dubnyk appeared in all three games for the Wild while forward Jason Pominville leads the way offensively.
Pominville may have had a three point week for the Wild and an even rating, but all three of his points were assists. It’s the rest of the team the kept the scoring going, Zach Parise, Nino Niederreiter, Charlie Coyle, Mikael Granlund, Gustav Olofsson, and Mikko Koivu all had two-point weeks but combined for a minus-six rating.
Dubnyk played all three games last week padding his stats even more, along with the 2-1-0 record he had a very respectable .940 save percentage and a 1.63 goals-against-average. The Wild have a chance to get even more points in the standings but it won’t be easy since they play Dallas, Nashville, and Chicago this week.
Weekly Prospect Profile: Nolan De Jong, Univ. Of Michigan (NCAA)
2016-17 stats: 25gp 4g 5a 9pts
Nolan De Jong is a very mobile defenseman but his offensive ability is however quite limited. Since he’s in the NCAA program, his skating fits the pace of that game, but as he transitions over to the pro game that is something he’ll have to improve.

Top Goaltender: Henrik Lundqvist (26-13-1 2.68GAA .911 save percentage)
Player of the Week: C Kevin Hayes (3gp 2g 4a 6pts)
The Rangers just keep winning. The Rangers put up a perfect 3-0-0 record this week and are now riding a six-game winning streak. The Rangers must have a thing for Valentine’s as they are perfect in the month of February. The win streak had the Rangers tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets (briefly) for the third spot in the NHL’s best Metropolitan Division.
Kevin Hayes is completely over his sophomore slump and his six-point week brought his points total to 42 on the year now. Hayes only had 36 last year, and he’s well on pace to shatter his career-high totals established in his rookie year when he scored 45. JT Miller leads the team with 46 points and he added another four to his total this past week.
The Rangers have one of the balanced attacks in the NHL, and at this moment have eight players with 10 or more goals this season. While Henrik Lundqvist hasn’t been his best, he has had a ton of run support. If Hank finds his game come playoff time, this group could shock and go all the way to the Cup final.
Weekly Prospect Profile: C Adam Tambellini, Hartford (AHL)
2016-17 stats: 48gp 11g 17a 28pts
Adam Tambellini is developing in a straight line. The son of former Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is in his second professional season, and he is on track to best his career high 32 points set in 74 games last year. Tambellini can do it all, and finds himself on the Wolf Pack’s power play and penalty kill, but he also leads the team in shootout goals. Don’t be surprised if he gets a call-up before the season’s end.

Player of the Week: C Nicklas Backstrom (2gp 2g 4a 6pts)
The Washington Capitals just cannot be stopped. The Caps continue to lead the league in points, even during their bye week. They went a perfect 2-0 this week with wins over the Detroit Red Wings and Anaheim Ducks. The Capitals are now unbeaten in February in the midst of a six-game win streak. Could this really be the year?
Nicklas Backstrom had an incredible week, scoring six points in the pair of games. Backstrom is now sitting alone in fourth place in the NHL scoring race, three points back of league leader Connor McDavid. TJ Oshie also put up gaudy numbers this week, scoring three goals and two assists, while Marcus Johansson added four points, a pair of helpers and a pair of goals.
The Capitals also made a trade this past week, acquiring Tom Gilbert from the Los Angeles Kings for Future Considerations. Gilbert slides into the number eight spot on the depth chart in an obvious move to bring depth to the club. With Carlson, Alzner, Orlov, Niskanen, Orpik and Schmidt safe in the top six spots, Gilbert joins Taylor Chorney as the depth defenders.
Weekly Prospect Profile: G Ilya Samsonov, Magnitogorsk (KHL)
2016-17 stats: 15 wins, 2.26 GAA, .933 save percentage
Samsonov was robbed of the title of “goalie of the tournament” in the World Juniors despite posting strong numbers (.930, 2.11). The 2015 1st rounder will be an asset to the Capitals going forward, as his path is currently blocked by Braden Holtby and Philip Grubauer. Samsonov is currently the starter for his KHL club, and his play has done more than enough to warrant a job in the AHL next season. It’s expected that Samsonov will come over so the Russian factor doesn’t apply here.
