It’s official. The NHL season is underway. All the action begins on Wednesday, Oct. 4. With four games on the schedule, it’ll be a full night of hockey for the first time in several months. The best matchup of Opening Night will be the infamous Battle of Alberta. It will feature the Edmonton Oilers hosting their Alberta rival Calgary Flames. Rogers Place will host what’s sure to be a great game, with the puck drop scheduled at 10:00 p.m. ET. However, keep in mind it will likely be delayed thanks to pregame ceremonies.
Both teams are expected to fight for one of the top three spots in the division. It’s quite likely both will finish in that range. For the first time in a while, the Battle of Alberta is relevant again. And since both teams have a bright future, it likely will remain relevant.
The Oilers enter tonight excited about this season. Many consider them the favorites to come out of the Western Conference. Some even have them winning the Stanley Cup. Led by Hart Trophy winner Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Vezina Trophy snub Cam Talbot, Edmonton will look to get an early advantage over their division rival.
Meanwhile, the Flames will not have recent signee Jaromir Jagr in the lineup, but they’ll still boast a very deep roster. The strength of Calgary is their blue line, with Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie, Dougie Hamilton, and new acquisition Travis Hamonic leading the way. But don’t overlook their forwards, as Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Mikael Backlund and Matthew Tkachuk are certainly capable of putting pucks in the net.
