According to the latest NHL trade rumors, Craig Anderson could be the next player traded from the Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators had a nightmare season in 2017-18. Fresh off an Eastern Conference Final appearance, the Sens had one of the worst seasons in franchise history. Their offseason thus far has been filled with drama and uncertainty. According to the latest NHL trade rumors, the latest player to request a trade out of Ottawa is starting goaltender Craig Anderson.

This comes less than a week after the Senators traded troubled forward Mike Hoffman to the San Jose Sharks, who proceeded to trade him to the Florida Panthers. The move was basically forced thanks to allegations of Hoffman’s fiance harassing teammate Erik Karlsson’s wife.

Anderson is coming off a rough season. In 2016-17, he was a huge reason the Senators were able to go to overtime in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Not only did Anderson post a .926 save percentage, he finished the regular season with a 25-11-4 record while allowing just 2.28 goals against per game.

During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Anderson posted a .922 save percentage, allowing just 2.34 goals against per game. However, he took a huge step back last season. Anderson finished with a .898 save percentage, allowing 3.32 goals against per game, an increase of over a goal per game from 2016-17.

Trading the goaltender could be difficult for the Senators. Not only does Anderson have a 10 team no-trade list, he’s also 37 years old. Moreover, he has two years remaining on his contract with an annual cap hit of $4.75 million. Anderson is due $5 million in 2018-19 and $4.5 million in 2019-20.

This could put the Senators in the market for Washington Capitals goaltender Philipp Grubauer. Armed with two first-round picks, the Sens could trade for him at the 2018 NHL Draft. Ironically, they’d likely use the Pittsburgh Penguins first-round pick to get Grubauer. The Senators acquired this pick in the Derick Brassard three-way trade that sent the center to the Penguins.
