5 moves the Chicago Blackhawks need to make this offseason
4. Draft A Goaltender
For the past nine seasons, goaltender Corey Crawford has been a constant in the net for the Blackhawks. He has spoiled them a bit, as he has consistently shown the ability to make up for his teammate’s mistakes.
Crawford’s recent injury woes should be a wakeup call for the Blackhawks. You need a good goalie to have success in today’s NHL. Just look at what having league average goaltending did for the Hurricanes. Their goalies got hot at the right time and now they’re the toast of the NHL. Robin Lehner turned the New York Islanders from a pretender into a postseason team.
Figuring out what’s next for Crawford, who has a year left on his deal, is important. But also, it’s time for the Blackhawks to find out what they have in 24-year-old goaltender Collin Delia. He did fine (.908 save percentage) in 16 games, especially when you consider he endured some of the worst games the Blackhawks had defensively.
Chicago should probably draft a goalie at some point in the 2019 draft. While top goaltending prospect Spencer Knight would be a massive reach at number three, perhaps they could trade up for him if he falls into the second round. The Blackhawks could use one of their two 2019 fourth-round picks to do it.
