4. Nicolas Beaudin

Nicolas Beaudin has been extremely impressive over the past two seasons for the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the QMJHL. He’s averaged over a point per game as a defenseman, which is outstanding. Beaudin’s mobility is excellent for a defenseman, as he’s faster and more mobile than most forwards.

Best of all, he knows how to use that speed. The best players aren’t just fast – they know how to use their speed to create chances. Beaudin uses his speed to lead the rush up the ice, pinch up in the offensive zone, and create chances for both his teammates and himself.

At 174 pounds, he’s not that physical. However, I’m not too concerned, as Beaudin uses his quickness and above-average positioning to steal the puck. He has a high-level hockey IQ and thinks a step ahead of his opposition.

To this point, Beaudin has not proven himself at the professional level. This will change this season, as he’ll be joining the Rockford Icehogs in the AHL. I’m curious to see how he responds to this promotion. The Icehogs could be a very fun team to watch this year if they trust their young players. Beaudin might be the best of those playing in Rockford.
