Miro Heiskanen
It’s odd that the Dallas Stars have an All-Star, and it’s not defenseman Miro Heiskanen. Rather, it’s Tyler Seguin, who has 32 points. Heiskanen isn’t even the Stars’ Final Vote Candidate. For some reason, it’s Jamie Benn, who has fewer points (19) than Heiskanen (22).

He’s been amazing all over the ice. Heiskanen is a driving force of the Stars, as he’s a lethal force in the offensive zone, even if his 22 points in 40 games don’t quite tell you the whole story. Zone entry data has not been updated yet for this season, but I’d wager Heiskanen’s one of the most brutally efficient defensemen in the NHL at exiting the defensive zone and entering the offensive zone.
Furthermore, Heiskanen has had a lot of pressure on him this season. He was already arguably the Stars’ best defenseman before this season. But with John Klingberg struggling, Heiskanen’s been asked to be their actual best defenseman. He’s flourished in that role too. Heiskanen plays over 24 minutes per game and rarely, if ever, shows a hint of fatigue.
It’s easy to overlook what he’s doing when guys like Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche are lighting up scoreboards across the league. However, don’t think Heiskanen’s greatness has been missed by me. He’s a pleasure to watch and he should be on the ice in St. Louis for the All-Star Game.
