Get to know the Philadelphia Flyers’ best-kept secret: Santa Gritty.
On Thursday, November 26th, fans the United States over sat around a table, broke bread, and gave thanks for the things that matter; things like family, friendship, and the Philadelphia Flyers‘ mascot, Gritty.
Yup, in case you missed it in our excellent holiday coverage here at Puck Prose, yours truly decided to give thanks for the googly-eyed personification of the City of Brotherly Love that has captured the hearts and souls of Philly fans the world over. Granted, the Eagles, Phillies, and Sixers haven’t exactly been good since Gritty’s inception, bringing up questions as to whether or not the big furry guy is potentially more of a trick than a treat, but honestly, who wants to focus on that now?
Gritty is the man, the dude, the guy in South Philly, and nothing is going to change that any time soon.

But you know, Gritty isn’t some enigma who simply exists within the walls of the Wells Fargo Center. No, he’s just like you and me. He has friends, crystals, and even goes on European vacations when he’s so inclined. And when the clock hits 12:00 am on Friday, November 27th – or whatever date the day after Thanksgiving happens to fall on – he’s hanging up his Turkey costume, pushing the pilgrims aside, and going all-in on that Christman cheer.
That’s right, say goodbye to Thanksgiving Gritty and hello to the best Gritty of all: Santa Gritty.
Now, in theory, this should be a pretty down year for the Gritster. The Flyers remain on an indefinite hiatus until the league irons out a plan on when/where/how to start the season, and until that day comes, there won’t be live games for Gritty to terrorize. He’ll probably sit back, make a few public appearances to appease his staving fans, and just get jolly and nice before being thrust back into action at some point in 2021.
Yeah, I don’t see that happening either.
With at least a month to get into mischief and a whole stadium/practice facility to run wild in Kevin McCalister-style, I fully expect Gritty to go full-on Home Alone 1 over the next few weeks while making some absolutely insane content for us social media-focused NHL fans looking for a little hockey kick this holiday season.
Look, I get that for some people, this is the happiest time of the year. But for others, especially this year, the holidays can feel rather lonely. If that’s you, just know that we’re here for you, as is Gritty, who can surely be reliably counted on to create premium holiday content to cure your holiday blues. In a November/(probably) December without hockey, that is a pretty decent consolation prize for fans of the Philadelphia Flyers, or the NHL in general.
