NHL: 30 best goalies of all time: 27. Tom Barrasso

Stats:

  • 89.2 save percentage
  • 3.24 GAA
  • 369 wins

Achievements:

  • 2-time Stanley Cup winner
  • 3-time All-Star

Tom Barrasso wanted no part in playing in the kid’s pool. Instead, the moment he was eligible, he jumped right into the deep end.

After forgoing the college route, Barrasso was taken with the fifth overall pick in the 1983 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres.

Making the choice to skip the unpaid ranks and go down the professional track proved to be a sagacious one as Barrasso proved he belonged right away. In his first year, his GAA was a mere 2.85. He followed that up with a 2.67 GAA. He would have a few years under his belt where he struggled but he ultimately got back on track in the late 90s. During the 1997-98 season, Barrasso posted his best GAA of 2.07. His 61 playoff wins currently rank 14th all-time and the trophy self of Barrasso is filled to the brim.

He was a back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion in 1991 and 1992, a two-time All-Star, and a Vezina Trophy winner in 1984. Barrasso has also been inducted into two separate Hall of Fames, the National Italian Hall of Fame and the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. For his championship-winning efforts in the early 90s, Barrasso was also elected into the Pittsburgh Penguins Ring of Honor. There should be no questions concerning his stature amongst his peers.
