Vegas Golden Knights Win Streak Could Flirt with NHL History
The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday to push their winning streak to nine consecutive games.
During this nine-game unbeaten streak, the Golden Knights have not played the stiffest competition. Their best wins have come against the Toronto Maple Leafs (twice), Winnipeg Jets, and Sabres.
Still, nine games in a row is nine games in a row, and the offense has been electric. In the last four games, Vegas has scored 22 times, highlighted by a seven-goal performance against Buffalo. Ex-Sabres captain Jack Eichel was responsible for three goals alone in that contest.
The Golden Knights win streak may not end anytime soon.
The next game for the Golden Knights is Saturday at home against the St. Louis Blues, a team struggling as badly as any club in the NHL. It seems likely that Vegas will extend its winning streak to ten games, so just how many wins might we see this team rattle off?
After the Blues, the San Jose Sharks and Arizona Coyotes come to town. As we all know, any team can win on any given night in the NHL, but those next three games should all be wins for Vegas.
From there, the Golden Knights go on a brief two-game road trip to visit the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. The Oilers will be no easy win, but if Vegas can pull that one off, a win in Vancouver should be likely.
When the team returns home, it will face off against the Ottawa Senators, Seattle Kraken, and Canucks. Seattle is enjoying a strong start to the year, but the other two games are very winnable.
The way I see it, Edmonton and Seattle are the only games Vegas has on its schedule in the next two and half weeks that scare me. If they manage to win those two games, a 17-game winning streak could be in the cards.
That 17-win threshold was reached by the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1992-1993 season and still stands as the longest winning streak in NHL history. At only nine games so far, we shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves, but the Golden Knights getting there seems possible.
I’ll also note that a potential 18th straight win could come against the Columbus Blue Jackets, another team that is not playing well.
A lot has to happen between now and December for the Golden Knights to make history, but I wouldn’t scoff at the idea of this team giving those ’92-’93 Penguins a run for their money.
