Yesterday we took a look at some possible names for the new ECHL team that’s set to play in Trenton, New Jersey next season. This will be the relocated Utah Grizzlies franchise. Some names we thought up include sharing a name with the city’s minor league baseball team and the heavy front runner of the city’s former ECHL team the Trenton Titans. We thought of even more names the team could use so here’s part two of potential names. Remember, the team name will be chosen as the result of a fan contest.
Trenton Devils
File this under “it’s an option, but not a good one”. No offense to the New Jersey Devils, but Trenton is more evenly divided between New York/New Jersey sports fans and Philadelphia sports fans. The rebranding from the popular Titans to the Trenton Devils is a commonly cited reason Trenton’s former ECHL team began going downhill to their eventual demise. Also if the team lacks any affiliation with the Devils, the team name wouldn’t make any sense. The Devils current ECHL affiliation is with the Adirondack Thunder.
Trenton Flyers
We’ll flip the scrip to the alternate option. Not everyone in Trenton is a Philadelphia sports fan, but anecdotal evidence (for example, the Trenton Thunder baseball team have appearances with the Philly Fanatic every season) points to it being tilted in their favor. We’re just saying if the new team name is going to be shared with an NHL team then the Flyers would be the better choice. The Trenton Titans started off and had their most successful years as a Flyers affiliate. If a player from the big club, or the occasional appearance from Gritty, is planned that’s sure to help sell tickets at Cure Insurance Arena.
Trenton Takers
This is purely our idea but we’re sure it might have you a bit confused, so let us explain. A famous local landmark is a bridge covered in giant letters that say “Trenton Makes The World Takes” in reference to the city’s place in history as a past manufacturing hub. So the “Takers” name comes from the “The World Takes” featured on the bridge (the bridge is featured prominently on the team's website). Is it the best idea based on a local landmark? Probably not, but if there’s a baseball team named “the Cleveland Guardians” because of some bridge statues that watch traffic this might work.
Trenton Tomato Pies/ Trenton Pork Roll
Both are local food staples. A “tomato pie” is what the region calls their pizza. The Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins already had special jerseys to pay tribute to the area’s pizza, so Trenton wouldn’t be the first team to do this. Pork Roll is a spiced ham type meat put on breakfast sandwiches. It’s the center of a common, yet passionate,. Jersey debate on if it should be called pork roll or “taylor ham”. The Thunder baseball team wear special “Pork Roll” jerseys for certain games throughout the season. A major supplier of it, Case's Pork Roll, calls Trenton home and would be a great sponsor and partner for the new team. Maybe neither of these will be a permanent name, but can be used for special promotions.
