Boston University and Boston College came into the weekend as the number one and two teams in the country. It was the first time that they were ever going to face off under those circumstances.

BC got the best of BU and won their first game in their home barn. It was a big win that saw all of their big boys come to play. They didn’t need any extra motivation to play well because this one was special no matter what.

On Saturday, they played again but this time it came at the home of Boston University. BC took a 2-0 lead but eventually, BU found a way to get it tied. Once Cutter Gauthier gave BC a 2-0 lead, however, they took over from there. Will Smith restored their two-goal lead at 13:45 of the third period.

At 17:49 of the same frame, future 2024 #1 pick Macklin Celebrini made it interesting. BU was never able to get that equalizer in the end and the 4-3 BC lead went final. They were able to complete the sweep over the #1 team as the #2 team.

Now, these two teams are tied for the lead in Hockey East. You’d assume that they are going to switch in the rankings when they come out. It doesn’t matter as there is a lot of hockey left but you know that will feel good for BC.

Once the NCAA ice hockey tournament starts, these two will come in as contenders for the Frozen Four. If they could somehow meet in the championship, it would be must-watch television.

Both of these barns were very into the matchup. It was a packed house in both games. College hockey is getting better and better each year and these two teams are a big part of it.

They aren’t done playing before the tournament yet either. They will face one another in the semifinals of the Beanpot. That will take place at the home of the Boston Bruins, TD Garden. The winner will take on the winner of Northeastern and Harvard in the Beanpot Final.

Although BC swept, BU played very well with them. It showed just how exciting college hockey can be with these two powerhouses leading the way. Hopefully, there is more to come.
