Red Wings must bring back these 3 players in the off-season
The Detroit Red Wings have an important off-season looming where there could be a big turnover.
Entering the off-season, the Detroit Red Wings and General Manager Steve Yzerman knew there would be changes to the roster through addition and subtraction.
With unrestricted, and restricted, free agents either coming or going, the organization needs still to make decisions on the upcoming roster for next season.
Among that group unsigned are three players that should be brought back for next season.
While some players may leave for another team, some players are key to the success of the team in the coming years.
Those players, Joe Veleno, David Perron, and Shayne Gostisbehere, were all important pieces to the Red Wings' push for a playoff spot last season. They need a contract and bringing them back would add some key pieces to the depth that made them successful.
The Detroit Red Wings should strongly consider bringing Joe Veleno back
Joe Veleno was a key part of the bottom-six role and elevated his game from the 2022-23 season. While scoring a career-high 28 points last season, he did not shy away from his defensive responsibilities and feisty play.
Although once thought of as a future scoring threat, he has been a crucial part of the bottom of the lineup, keeping the opposition off the scoreboard and playing against the top six of the opposition regularly.
He could leave for more money, he has developed his game fully in Detroit and may not find a bigger role elsewhere. He has come a long way and his progression into a solid two-way player is only beginning.
David Perron is someone that the Detroit Red Wings could use next year
While he saw a slight dip in his offensive production last season, he was still a vital part of the team's success. He was a massive part of the team's late-season success that almost landed them a playoff spot.
He brings a lot to the table and can use his leadership to mentor the young stars coming up from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Perron is older but he still has offensive skills to bring secondary scoring.
He is a leader on the ice and uses his experience in tough times down the stretch. Aside from the scoring and leadership, he can also bring a certain energy to the lineup and game itself.
If he is willing to sign a similar contract he signed to come to Detroit, he should be back with Detroit next season as he has many attributes.
Shayne Gostisbehere would bring a lot to the Detroit Red Wings in 2024-25
A defenseman who has traveled a bit around the league, Shayne Gostisbehere signed a deal last off-season that was good for him and the team.
He has come into the Red Wings organization and earned that contract with his offensive play. Gostisbehere has been a great asset to the team, driving the power play to be a part of the team's offensive firepower last season.
He can control the play in the defensive zone and can join the rush at any given moment. He led the Detroit defense in scoring and should be brought back solely based on his puck-moving skills and his deadly production on the power play.
The Detroit Red Wings and Yzerman have a massive off-season to try and bring this team back to the playoffs. With many UFAs and RFAs on the roster, the organization has its work cut out for them.
However, these three players will not break the bank and be able to add more than scoring to the team. The core of the team is already there so now it is time to build around them and this would be a great start.
