Following a disappointing first round exit from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Ducks made a few significant changes (with one more potentially to come). Anaheim relieved Bruce Boudreau of his duties behind the bench and re-hired a familiar face in Randy Carlyle.
Perhaps the most intriguing move of the offseason was the one that wasn’t made (not yet at least). Emerging top prospect Shea Theodore has essentially made one left-handed defender expendable; and those options include restricted free agent Hampus Lindholm or Cam Fowler. Look for Anaheim to shed the latter once the right deals comes along.
The most significant change from a fantasy hockey point of view is between the pipes. John Gibson will step up as the undisputed number one starter carrying a bulk of the load. He should be among that top 10 group of NHL goaltenders.
Expect Anaheim’s offensive blue liners to see a spike in production. There’s no way they can duplicate their epic goal-scoring drought from the beginning of 2015-16.
You can expect typical consistency from Anaheim’s star forwards. It will however be interesting to see how the Ducks plan to use free agent signing Antoine Vermette – a guy that typically takes a lot of face-off’s.
