  • Joining the Coyotes youth movement in 2016-17 is the youngest General Manager in NHL history, John Chayka. Given his background, it’s safe to assume that Arizona will be among the busiest in using their analytics department.

Mr. Chayka inherits a favorable situation from Don Maloney, who was seemingly in the process of building a winning product. Two key factors could largely dictate how the Coyotes fare in 2016-17: how will their goalies perform? what type of impact can rookies such as Dylan Strome or Christian Dvorak have?

Given the cap hit and length of term remaining, Arizona must hope that 34-year-old Mike Smith can re-establish himself. If he gets injured again or drops the ball, the weight falls on the shoulders of young Louis Domingue and career backup/AHL starter Justin Peters.

The addition of Alex Goligoski helps secure the Coyotes blue line for the foreseeable future. Michael Stone and Connor Murphy still have some room to grow, while Oliver Ekman-Larsson has Norris Trophy talent. Watch for this group to create a lot more offense in 2016-17, spending more time in the opposing teams zone.

Barring any sophomore slump, Max Domi and Anthony Duclair should be able to emerge as the Coyotes top two forwards this season. Martin Hanzal could challenge if he can put together a healthy campaign, which could be highly beneficial if Arizona has plans to move the 2017 UFA.

Don’t be afraid to take a late-round flyer on Dylan Strome or Christian Dvorak – it’s unclear what type of impact they could have this early, but the duo should be given every opportunity to succeed.
