2019 NHL Mock Draft: Do New Jersey Devils go with Kaapo Kakko?
Nils Höglander is an undersized forward who is no stranger to the professional ranks. This season was his third professional season in Sweden after spending at least 20 games in his age 16 and 17 seasons in Allsvenskan. Hoglander put up 14 points in 50 games this season with Rogle BK, making two postseason appearances for them as well.
In addition, he played in eight games with the U-20 team, tallying seven points in the process. Hoglander is a terrific skater. This helps negate his size disadvantage. He’s pretty strong on the puck too, which is surprising. Hoglander’s skating is his bread and butter, as he’s one of the best pure skaters in this draft.
His defense is impressive as well. Hoglander is much more physical than you’d think, which is something I like to see. He can be relentless on the forecheck and you can’t deny he has a ton of potential on offense with his soft hands and stickhandling.
However, there’s a reason Hoglander’s going to be available here. He doesn’t produce nearly enough for someone as good as him. Hoglander’s shot needs to improve, as does his passing. But he’s already shown improvement there, which is a good sign.
I think he winds up being a regular NHL player. Whether that’s on the third or second line depends on how much his offense develops.
