NHL: 30 best Game 7 performances in Stanley Cup history
NHL: 30 best Game 7 performances in Stanley Cup history: 29. Sweeney Schriner
- 2 points
- 2 goals
It was just about over.
The Detroit Red Wings filled coolers with champagne after taking a 3-0 lead in the 1942 Stanley Cup Finals against the Toronto Maple Leafs. At this point, no one had ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in the finals.
Yet, while the Red Wings were busy celebrating and engraving their names prematurely into the Cup, Hall of Famer Sweeney Schriner grew more and more apoplectic. Unwilling to simply lay down, Schriner and his Maple Leafs forced things to a Game 7. Once there, Schriner took care of the rest.
If falling behind 0-3 in the series didn’t faze him, then there was no way a 1-0 deficit in the final game was going to bother him either. Schriner scored the game-tying goal just a few minutes later and they managed to creep ahead to take a one goal lead soon after.
If Schriner learned anything, it was to play until the final horn went off. With the Cup just within arm’s reach, the Winger gave his squad some much needed breathing room by scoring yet again which ultimately resulted in the Maple Leafs taking home the Cup.
Since then, only three teams have completed a comeback while losing the first three games but no one has put on the sort of performance that Schriner has while doing so.
